Have you spoken with your motec dealer about this? I know that motec's can be very particular about their pinouts.
Also, your display *should* just be a CAN connection, I don't think you'll be wiring your fuel level sensor directly to the digital dash. This is assuming you have an M1x ecu and newer C series display.

The 1994 wiring diagram shows the fuel level info on page Z-42. It looks like the level sensor connects to pin 2B on the gauge cluster, a White/Green wire. The ground for the fuel level sensor takes a very long path, it shares ground with the gauge cluster and they are both grounded through the engine harness. If you have a complete custom chassis loom, make sure they check that the fuel level sensor gets connected to ground.
