VA Fuel guage inop-any ideas?

My fuel guage started acting up intermittently and now it won't work at all. How do I check to see if it is the sending unit or my guage acting up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

follow the steps shown in the service manual: resistance checks at the connector on ttop of the tank (to check sender and gage separetly).

On my car the resistance checked fine. Removed the sender from the tank and found the float had cracked and filled with gas, so that the gage always read empty.

I don't have a service manual for this one, only my FC. This is definitely a short because it would work intermittently before it stopped working entirely.

There is plenty already out there on this (search). We jsut recently covered it again. A shop manual is absolutely essential to any FD troubleshooting....especially if you want to tackle it yourself

From experience is this usually a sending unit issue or a guage issue? I didn't find very many posts on it.

On average it's usually the gauge. Age and milage rack up a breakdown of the electronics within the dash..However you must follow the testing procedure. See page c1-13 in the manual

Pull the pump assembly and make sure the tank baffles are not loose and blocking the float arm.

Then clean the electrical contact to the level sender.

Problem solved, should have checked the obvious first. Some jackleg taped the wires together when the warlbo fuel pump was installed. Hope the rest of the work they did is better than that!! I guess this is why many people choose to do their mods themselves.
