I just did this yesterday and I relocated mine to the engine bay similar to the 2nd gen's location. I used a t2 fuel filter and the car seemed to run fine with it and it won't be a pain in the *** to change again. I boosted the car pretty hard and didn't seem to notice any drop in fuel pressure so hopefully this works out pretty well.

I like to stick with OEM filters, but if Rotary Performance says it's ok, it probably is.
anyone know where theres a good write up as long as im here? i got no idea on this car...like u guys said, my 2nd gen is a freakin peice of cake but i cant honestly even say i know where it is on the 3g

I use Purolator F54803 and have had no problems whatsoever. Costs about $16 at the local auto parts store, and you don't have to get it shipped.
IIRC, Purolator makes the "OEM" piece, and the one from the auto parts store is the exact same thing.

The problem for me is I still always get a fountain of fuel - I think those hose clamping pliers would make a huge difference.

I was considering some options for a new fuel filter on my car recently. I wanted something that was easier to service, though I wanted to be sure that the aftermarket filter would flow well enough, have a reasonable service interval, and do a reasonable job at filtering (particle size). After looking around a bit, I decided to just get another stock filter (though I would have picked up a Purolator had I read this thread first
). I wasn't convinced of the applicability of the aftermarket filters I looked at, and I really don't have room for any more crap in the engine bay. Like others have pointed out, it took me a long time to change my filter the first time, but it doesn't take all that long for me now. It's still a PITA, but I guess it is worth it to me to not have something else in the engine bay.
Maybe a mounting position under the service plate in the hatch floor would be the best of both worlds.

The fuel filter on an RX-7 is a serious pain to change. It is on top of the differential and is not fully visible so you are basically removing clamps and hoses blind while wrapping your hands around both sides of the differential. All the while breathing fumes and getting soaked in fuel.
I did mine yesterday and if I had known it was going to be such a pain I would have planned on a relocation. My lungs are still sore from all the fumes and my skin dry from the splashed fuel. Not hard my ****.
