From my understanding the stock knock sensor will only cause up to a maximum 6 degree retard in timing if it is faulty or knocks. If you unplug it it WILL cause a 6 degree timing retard and a check engine light. Besides if it is bad you will get fault code 5 when you pull the codes. So don't bother with the supra tactics.
Trev, your homework assignments is the READ THE FSM and stop posting bad info.
On a related note I just rebuilt my motor and noticed a nasty sound on startup coming from the front of the engine. Then I realized that my PS pump wasn't topped off all the way, filled it up and the nose stopped.

i just wanted to update on the people that were helping us out with the problem that the noise stopped coming around 20 miles. we're guessing something was just breaking in like the new chain or something. alvaro said the car's nice and strong and starts with the first try and everything seems to be okay, even though vacuum is still a bit weak, but i guess that's normal with a brand new rebuilt. again, thanks for all the help guys, and good luck with your fd's....

we opened up the front cover twice and didn't see anything messed up or wrong or scratched or anything. i had checked everything when building the motor thoroughly, and everything was up to spec and better. compression test numbers were pretty good too for a brand new rebuild, so the engine was getting compression. i guess we'll see if something does go wrong, but i doubt it since everything seems perfect right now....
