FPD replaced, still a hint of fuel smell still

well i had a STRONG fuel back when i got my car in january and the FPD got replaced, injector o-rings replaced, and vacuum hoses replaced and tied off. but as of a month's time i've had a fainter fuel smell than the one before. i really didn't mind it too much cause i thought it might have been excess burning off or it may have gotten into parts that weren't cleanable and the heat made the fumes come. however, today rx7will did suspension work for me and said he smelled fuel from either the secondary turbos or the oil pan area.

any idea of what the problem could be from the symptoms i just described?

thanks
kris

How sure are you that ALL the fuel lines are tight? I can think of 14 connection points off the top of my head, any one of which can leak faintly if the line wasn't fully installed, or worse, they used the old hose clamps...

For the back of the engine, there would be the fuel line into the FPD, and the line out of the regulator. Both of those lines connect to tubes that are part of the tube nest ('cause rat's nest is really for the vacuum system, right? ) running under the very backside of the UIM.

That's where I'd start. Probably pull the UIM and start checking, were it I.

Check the fuel injectors. Sometimes a leaky oring isn't always the case, I had to replace both my primary injectors.

looks like i might as well have my injectors blueprinted, cleaned and balanced, on top of changing out all the fuel lines.

The short rubber hose between the primary and secondary injectors was my culprit. Of course I didn't know this until the car caught fire My car was saved, but be very diligent with any fuel odors you notice.

Damon, had your car been subjected to the updated fuel hose that connects these two? I'm wondering if anyone has had problems with the swaged fitting they retrofitted?

Mine had the update. The hose itself hardened and developed a pinhole in the rubber, the fittings were not the culprit in my case.

I've seen this too. It really sucks to replace all the o-rings, FPD, etc and then find the primary injectors are actually bad.

You can remove the UIM and ACV then turn the ignition key on, jump the GND and FP pin on the diagnosis connector. This will turn on the fuel pump and allow you to see where the fuel is coming from.

thanks turbojeff
M2 is actually gonna check out the problem for me since they were the ones who did the o-rings and FPD last time. hopefully they'll be nice and give me a warranty type deal =)

your primaries are most likely leaking. if the smell is coming from the passenger side that's probably the culprit. you can't just take them out and get them cleaned either, cause they're probably be leaking from the valve body. you'll need to get new injectors. the heat causes them to break and leak.

anyone know best place to get injectors flowing at stock cc's ? should i replace primaries and secondaries or just primaries?
i'm gonna wait and see what M2 says also before i actually buy them, gonna head up there on tuesday.

I sent mine to RC engineering. I had tried a local injector cleaning shop, and they said they could do it, then when I went in, they said they weren't set up to handle side feed injectors. After a MAD scramble, including finding out about the intracacies of shipping "dangerous goods" via Fed Ex (because of the gas smell), I got 'em to RC. They had them back in three days. They work fine in my engine.

Next time, I'll seal the hell out of the bags I send them in BEFORE I go to the Fed Ex shipping place!!!

if they can be cleaned and rebalanced then that's what i'm going to do. i'd save a lot of money opposed to buying new injectors. i heard RC Engineering was great. they are going to be my first choice for injector work
