Red face Found the problem finally

I was having multiple issues with my car and i THINK i found the problem.

THE TPS!!!

I had my car at the shop to diagnose a problem with stalling and they said it was the IAC in which i told them to change anyway, they said the TPS was fine. Well just recently i got a CEL for the TPS, then i realized my airpump wasnt turning on. Since its nearly impossible for me to adjust my TPS, i opt to buy another TB with an already adjusted TPS on it.

I found one and i put it in.

After i put the new TB/TPS in, CEL was gone, airpump started to work and car felt great. Well almost great, i didnt really drive it cause the idle was a bit high (around 1500-1600 at idle) so i need to adjust that first.

Then i got a strange smell from the bay, like burnt coolant or something burning? Although i didnt touch anything coolant related so i dont know what that is. Could it be the main cat? I have an original main cat (70k miles) and the airpump hasnt been working properly lately so you think the smell is coming from there?

Anyway im glad the CEL is gone, now i just gotta adjust the idle, where is the idle adjustment screw again?

Good job. The idle air adjustment screw is under the elbow. You will need a flat head stubby screwdriver. To adjust the idle the screw is right buy your throttle cables on your throttle body. You will need a 8mm wrench to loosen off the nut and then use a philps screw driver and adjust the idle that way. Hope that helps.

In this thread it show the front of the throttle body:

Notice the little screw right by the bottom right hand bolt; thats the idle air adjustment.

The idle adjustment screw can be seen in this pic:

http://www.anodized.com/~clayne/fd3s/tb/tb.09.jpg

In the pic it has white stuff all over the threads of the screw. The picture is sideways.

Wait a second.

I am totally confused.

That screw is right in front of sight if you're looking at the TB.

I took my old TB and layed it sideways like the pic and that same screw ended up to be the screw thats in the front of the TB.

Im lost.

You much have touched the throttle body cooling line and also the 90 degree coolant hose under the throttle body in order to install it. The 90 degree hose under the throttle body is a bitch and often rips. Hope you bled the coolant system afterwards as removing the trottle body and detaching/reattaching those lines probably let some air into the cooling system.

I don't understand why it would be so hard to adjust your throttle body. All you need is a $20 voltmeter from Radio Shack. Damian has a huge write up about it in the Archives. Quicker, cheaper than buying a TB and at least you would have had your idle set correctly. As it is now, you need to recheck the TPS readings after you adjust your idle to make sure they didn't change after you screw around with the throttle plate openings.

Nah i did the TB coolant bypass from my previous TB, i didnt bother reconnecting the rubber hose to the TB coolant nipples that i do have now on my new TB.

As far as the TPS, the TPS harness must have been altered or cut because i CAN NOT adjust it with the TB hanging which i thought of, nor can i adjust it while on the car because the screws were stripped. Only thing i can think of left is to buy another TB with an adjusted TPS on it already which i did and now car feels better except for the slightly higher idle.

I know exactly where it is, i even put the FSM link as part of my favorites but looking at threads in the 3rd gen section, it seems everyone doesnt mind an easy question as part of a topic. Cause i see it all the time, if they can do it, i can too.

I probably would know if i searched or did look at the FSM like you stated in your above statement but like i said, im looking for an easy answer . Not to mention i didnt need to know much about my car since it ran flawless the first 2 years of ownership. I guess now its showing some signs of wear and tear. I think its now a good time to start reading up on the "FSM". Thanks

Post count means nothing to me. And it shouldnt mean anything to you too. When i see a post count, it tells me how many times that person hit the "reply" button. In no way shape or form tells you how "informative" that person is.

And 6,578 posts from the lounge is impossible because you cant gain posts from posting in the lounge.

Thanks for your concern.

Nah its dark out so im gonna do it tomorrow.

But looking at the FSM, there is the throttle adjusting screw which i knew ALLL along. And the AAS, air adjusting screw.

The throttle adjusting screw is in front of the TB, maybe you guys are talking about the AAS which is underneath the TB, and you have to take off the elbow to get to.
