I'm confused. Are you saying that FMICs aren't for racing?

well yea... FMIC arent good for track..... theyr not effient and block the radiator and all kinds of **** i dont feel like typing..... your best option is V mount... if u have the money...... then an upgraded SMIC... and if all else fails... FMIC :]

I DD mine with an FMIC. The only issue is slow speeds in traffic. I do have a stock radiator. I would get a koyo, and then I doubt even a fan mod is necessary. At speeds it's awesome.

I think bottom line is, of you are looking for making big power later on then you are going to need a FMIC; if not then put in a SMIC. I have a FMIC and love it, I think the good outweighs the bad. The front mount gets so much more air that I think it makes a big diff.
But mine is not a daily either.

If he was thinking about the future, might aswell fork out the extra money for a vmount and be done with it.

FMIC isn't good when you're standing still, or going at low speeds, and when the car is rolling, it'll take longer for the radiator to be effective than with a vmount or smic setup

most FMICs will also have long intercooler pipes, causing air pressure drop, increasing turbo lag making it less practical for low speeds.

I dont DD my car but aside from slightly high temps in stop and go, theres nothing wrong with having a FMIC for DD.

If you are standing still, it doesn't matter what IC you have.. lol!

if you are at low speed, just turn on your fans.

the piping/core design and position of the FMIC is really important especially for RE cars... you guys categorize FMIC as if they're all the same... they're not... amount of bars/tube and size and type core has a lot to do w/ the air flow passing through....

quality kits like HKS or Blitz uses lighter and better material with plenty of air to pass through the FMIC to the radiator...

i'm just saying... not all FMIC are the same.. some are better than others..

My number one reason not to get a FMIC for an DD is: Some people love the five finger discount. You know when an FD has a FMIC there are tons of goodies that go with it as well.

That statement goes for the SMIC or Vmount also.

Holy hell, there is so much bad info in this thead. All of which was posted by people with join dates in '06. ****, if you dont know what your talking about, dont try to sound cool and just throw out some bullshit.

Now, there has been more than enough info in this thead to make a good decesion. Like somebody said earlier, what it comes down to is what are you wanting to do with the car?

Drag=FMIC + upgraded rad
Track=Large smic + rad, or vmic
DD, you could do either though. With an FMIC you will want to upgrade your rad regardless, and do the fan mods. Just try to get the rad as much air as possible.

IMO just get the best used IC you can find. Dont buy one new, they dont wear out. If its in good condition, it will be fine. Try to find a pfs, m2 anything, the greddy smic, etc etc. Dont go the cheapo route, you will be frusterated in the end when you start to max it out.

And to the person who said if you wanna make big power you need an FMIC, thats complete bs.

hokay, i'm actually wondering some similar things as the OP. I have a FMIC from a SRT-4 (from my TII project that no longer has it's TII engine) and a truck load of piping, hose & clamps. i have no problem fabricating something but i don't have an extractor hood.

the car is my DD & has an aftermarket (dunno what brand) radiator. solutions?

what additional goodies would a Vmount car have than a FMIC car doesn't? They both have a bunch of supporting mods that are a must.

One can spot an FMIC from 100 feet way... Typically when a car has a FMIC you know it has an upgraded ECU, IC (duh), Intake, possible upgraded turbos, boost controller, gauges, upgraded radiator. The works. Same goes for a Vmount. Except that a Vmount is a little harder to spot than a FMIC.

lol.. we don't need another neverending debate about intercoolers.

each application Cgotto6 mentioned, there's very little difference if you get a higher grade intercooler... not something bought only because its "cheap". "you pay what you get" still applies.

if you have a "quality" intercooler, you can use it for any application... drag, track, dd.

bottom line is... if you don't really race the car ... SMIC "with" proper ducting will do just fine for DD..

There is no Practical or unpractical about FMIC... its not a air filter where if it rains your in trouble... both FMIC and VMIC will suffer from rocks and crap... but both'll still work fine..

Wrong. If you run an FMIC on the track, you will overheat. No ifs, and, or buts about it. An FMIC is the worst choice for anyone planning to run on the track. Period.

For how most of these cars are used -- cruising on the weekend with the occassional WOT blast, an FMIC is fine. Those living in hotter climates with hilly terrain would do best to avoid an FMIC though. My mechanic Rick had the big Apexi front mount and switched to the ASP Large. His intake temps aren't really much higher but his water temps under heavy load (Altamont pass with A/C on on a hot day) are much lower.

Like I said, If I spot a V mount, I know the guy has money (2k vs 1k). Also typical that if someone has V mount, they have all the stuff mentioned above... maybe better quality stuff since they can afford 2+K IC. I've seen several fmic with stock rad and stock twins and *** under the hood. All the V mount set ups I've seen usually have upgraded rad and nicer stuff... why? people who could afford V mount could afford other "nicer" ****. Hence my point earlier. And personally, I don't think V mounts are that much harder to spot..

when u guys say "overheat"...do u actually mean the engine WILL overheat or u think it would run HIGHER temp than a smic......?

sorry herb, i have to agree w/ Montego on this one... RX-7 alone is a very eye catchy car.. FMIC does make the car catch even more attention

I would assume most people will not be able to recognize a VMIC unless they know RX-7s or are into cars enough to know what a VMIC is.

If they don't know what it is.. they're less likely to investigate
