Finished 2nd in SM2 class at regional SCCA Auto-X (Pics & Vid)
Ok I am stoked and I don't care if this gets moved or not, but I own a 3rd gen and this is a 3rd get story int he 3rd Gen Specific category.
Ok here is the setup. I just finished putting on coilovers, hi-flow can and a wideband in the past couple of months. I decided to enter the car into the regional SCCA Auto-X just to shake the car down seeing as though I am setting the car up more for track and HPDE days than anything. I feel comfortable with the car but I was very unsure how the new Tein RA coilover's stiff rear spring would react at an auto-x. I though it might be too tail happy. Anyway as of registering they inform me that I am in SM2 class. For those of you that don't know the class is for anybody with an interior in thier car and unlimited mods including a shaved R-compound tire, basically slicks. I am running what you see in my signature as well as a set of 3 year old Bridgestone RE730's that have been shaved by the many highway miles I have put on them.
With about 15 min before our group sets out, all the SM2 guys go running to their cars and take off to a back road behind the stadium where we are running and scrub and heat up their tires. I slowly meander over to my car and with about 6 min left just start the car up to get it up to temp. After we stage everybody has pyrometers out checking temp. and pressure guages out getting just the right amount of air in thier tires. I just sit there helmet on ready to go with 32 psi in as manufacturer suggests. After all 5 of my runs and seeing that a Vette that puts down 500 hp and sits on 11 1/2 slicks puts down a time almost 2 sec faster than me I leave thinking that I had a great day, a lot of fun, but no trophy. My friend Rusty from Rotorsports racing who campains his very own 2nd get with cut tires and camber plates calls me and tells me that over the loud speaker he heard his name called. They told him he had recieved 3rd place. It took a min to register that I had just barely beaten him by about .5 sec. but I then realized that I came in 2nd. It made me feel even more elated about my cars setup and how sorted the car turned out to be.
In the link below is a 13 MB ZIP file that has some pics of my car, Rusty's 2nd Gen, and the 500 hp Vette (NA), but is capable of 700 on the bottle. There is also a 30 sec movie of one of my mid pack runs without sound(not quite the whole run as my digital camera only can get 30 sec). We all know what a rotary sounds like so just hum along real loud and remember to shift to second down the short straight, and then back to first at the end of it.

Make sure if you type it in to do it just like this because for some reason the server is case sensative.

Congratualtions on the strong finish. It brought back memories when I autoXed a 1983 first gen RX-7 in Class C in 1983-5. I reviewed your mov. file. It would seem while the mods you did helped, the real merit on a course like this goes to the driver. You are cutting the cones close and seem to to be hunting for good entries into the corners. I'm a little rusty on current classifications. Run up against Mitsu Evos? What were their times like?
Just out of curiosity, how many horses do you think your setup is pushing with that street port? I'm thinking of moving into something similar with my 94. What have you done with fuel management? While I'm sure the PFC and wideband help, don't you need bigger injectors and an improved fuel pump with your setup?

I'd say I'm putting down around 300-310 or so at 12 lbs. if I had to guess. I haven't turned the boost up yet. In the Auto-X I don't know if I even reached 10 psi. I am having trouble fine tuning my boost controller, but I'm working on it daily.
As far as fuel is concerened I am probably running right on the edge of the stock injectors. I had new ones put in not to long ago before some of the other mods and I almost regret not going bigger. I have dropped in a 98' Supra's fuel pump that only had 10K miles on it because my friend went single as soon as he got his car and I know that helps with fuel pressure. I have tuned mainly my fuel maps so that I am running around 11.5 AFR under throttle. I don't trust myself enough to start messing with timing or other real fine tuning stuff.
Using the dataloggit with the wideband makes a world of difference though. I highly suggest the combo. The Innovate LM-1 is a cinch to setup with the dataloggit too. The hardest part was getting under my car to screw the sensor in to a bung I had already had put in and plugged a while back. Good luck with your car. Everything I have done to my car seems to work well together and comes highly recommended.

I haven't been autocrossing that long. I have only done it 3 maybe 4 times in this car. I had been to a couple before that with some friends and got to drive my old Probe GT but it wasn't a lot of fun. I am much more suited to track days and HPDE. I plan on attending the next NASA event at Carolina Motorsports Park at the end of the month. I have a friend that is the head instructor for the VA NASA region and he is going to help me cure my early turn in and my tendancy to brake early. I guess those two kinda go hand in hand but I lose a lot on exit by doing it. Don't get me wrong I am not horrible but it something to be worked on.
By the way it is my 2nd trophy autocrossing and my first two events I was in novice and no trophys were given out. I have a first in class(basically stock class) and now a 2nd in SM2 which I am much more proud of. Here is a link to the results. AWD cars ruled!

Do you think you can do it again? I'll be ready for you next event. See you there! Come to think of it, come by and your FD corner weighed AFTER the season is over.
