Finally started to work on car!

Ok, I picked this 93 Touring VR up in Nov. (sig) 4 months later and my dad and I finally started working on it. We got the engine pulled out last night. I'm so excited!

I used the Bruce Torentine (sp) Engine Removal video. It was a big help. Some things we had to figure out ourselves that he didn't explain very well but after figuring it out some were just us thinking "oh, duh."

One of the biggest pains was the damn Precat. That was a BITCH to get out with the engine. It was getting cought up under the car and got cought between the car and tranny and gashed the hell out of the tranny housing. Other than the Precat, over all it went pretty smoothly.

Next step is to take off the accessories on the block. Heading out to the garage in a few min. and gonna start working on that.

Pictures below

Glad you got that sucker out!

The pic link you have requires a login, BTW.

Lookin' good! What's wrong with the motor? Are you rebuilding it yourself, putting in a reman, what?

The apex seals are blown. I'm going to rebuild this one. First attempt to rebuild an engine.

Remove tranny with engine. Put engine back in with tranny, precat/DP is a snap that way. You also don't have to try and connect/disconnect clutch and input shaft from under the car. Wiring to starter and trans also is easier to have connected while the engine is out.

FYI. You can pull the engine and trans with the hood on.

I debated on removing it with the tranny but the video went with disconnecting the tranny and engine and I've never pulled an engine before so I didn't want to go an uncovered/explained rout. I will probably pull the trans with the engine next time I have to rebuild/replace the engine. I know that the engine could have been pulled with the hood on but taking the hood off was no problem at all and I felt better doing it that way. Didn't want to take any chances. Thanks for the tips and I know that you have had much experience in doing this so I definately take your suggestions into consideration.

Now, 1 of the 4 bolts is stripped on the downpipe and we have to cut it off. And that is a problem right now because it appears that the tool my dad was gonna use is possibly broken. (Some screw is broke on it)

It helped a lot! At one point the engine was tilted bad and we just adjusted the weight and out it came.

OMG! A stock pre-cat! I haven't seen one of those in YEARS. Good luck with the project man!

You sure can, but it only takes about 2 minutes, and the help of a friend to pull it off. And doing so makes manuevering around the engine bay a heck of a lot easier. When I did my rebuild, I left the hood on, but in retrospect, I really should have taken it off.

Thanks. Yeah, I was lucky to find this FD still in 100% stock form. I doubt this is it's first engine because working under the car and in the engine bay I noticed where it looks like they had taken off bolts to replace or rebuild the engine. 86k miles on the clock.

Well, we finally got that damn precat off. We broke 3 of the 4 Nuts. Whoever removed it before cross threaded the nut onto the stud. We had to drill the last one out. I'll get pics up later of the nut and some more progress on the project.

The nuts have a locking feature to them - they really aren't fun.

LOL! Thanks. The garage was my moms parking spot till it became my dad's "working area" because he is doing lots of stuff to the house right now. About 2 years ago he tore out the old stairs and built new stairs from ground up. He's been working on the house since, from the kitchen to the shed outside, sprinkler system, and coming soon a addition to the house. When I started thinking about buying an FD I got them both to agree that the car will get the garage and we will clean out the other side so my mom can park in it again.

My dad and his cousin have always loved RX7's since they first came out. And loved them more and more between their new body styles. My dad is just excited he gets to work on one because he has always wanted one in the first place. (maybe his chance to live vicariously through me )

This project has been fun and we have a lot of work to do.

Was able to get a little more done on the engine.

Here is the link for new pics and the first ones. I added a sub folder so now the pics no longer work on the first page.

Broke another nipple. I think this is the Turbo controller solenoid?

I think thats the 3rd or 4th nipple I broke.

This broke when I was removing the hose from the engine bay.

You can actually just take off the stock plastic tube that broke off and connect it directly to the metal coolant pipe from the fire wall tube. (The coolant tube in the last posted pic)

Awesome, one less piece to have to buy... Even though that piece is probably only $5 or so. Thanks for the tip.

No problem ..but that part I bet is alot more then $5. Heck the little interior plastic tabs cost more then $5. Just use a wrench to remove the rest of the broken coolant piece. I believe its a 21 mm, its been awhile.

Thanks, I'll remove it tomorrow. Yeah, you're probably right about the part not being $5.

my dad thinks they're a waste of time. he likes old muscle cars, but he won't get a project car to work on...my mom's kind of a sack about this kind of stuff.
