I want to stop being so concerned. I wasnt too concerned at first. If you read back you'll see that at first I just wanted to know what to look for when I fly out to buy it. Then, the points about whether its cosmetically perfect or not, the car is 15 years old and is even more temperamental because of that, came up. And these points made alot of sense.... hence the concern. I am trying as hard as I can to be as responsible about this decision as I can.
Again, I'm loving the input and it is playing a huge role in whether I fly out there or not.

"I would stop obsessing with getting something "pristine" "
"Then build it to what you want"
I am not mechanically inclined. And I dont want to build it to what I want. What I want is exactly what I could have abtained in a brand new one in '93 - '95. But again, I was 11 years old So now Im old enough to drive, and better yet, afford it.

Well you mentioned spending money was no issue if it gets you the car you want (I hope for your sake you REALLY believe that) so being mechanically inclined shouldn't be necessary unless you can't find a local shop to take it to.
And trust me, whether you want it it stock or custom made you will eventually build it to what you want. Buying something pristine doesn't mean you'll get a 7 you don't have to put money into. They all need money. And if you're spending money, you're making it how YOU want it.

i say its a good price if you can get them to include a 2 year mechanical and drivetrain warranty. if they say no or "absolutely not" like many dealers will when it comes to this car offer way less than $27,000 and you can pay right now. of course im not telling you how to buy a car but based on experiences its real condition doesnt depend on mileage or previous ownership. or even looks for that matter.

I highly doubt VIPimports will lower that price. They cater to a certain clientele that wants the best. The main question is... is that the color combo you like? The black exterior is nice, but the tan interior is not for everyone. I wouldn't worry about having to put money into repairs as there most likely won't be any. If in a year or so, you decide that the car wasn't what you expected, you could sell it for close to the same price you bought it for. 30k for you isn't the same as 30k for alot of other people. You have to pay for what you want.

30k original miles, never wrecked, has been fully inspected by A-spec. This car is one of the best running/riding FD's that we have ever seen. It rides/drives like a new car. The red calipers/rotors in the pics have been changed to new black rotors/calipers. It is definitely one of the last few nice examples of this car. $17,000

I like my MB and black/tan interior. Easier on me in summer and I like color. I hate Red Fd's. White would be ideal, but we all know...
Spending money on FD very easy. I did some suspension bushings, some brakes, etc - $1k in parts. Now I'm doing engine bay hoses - gaskets - o-rings. Another $1k. Adds up very quick.
I'd say buying best one can afford is a good idea. But still, with that age - lot's can go wrong. Rubber compresses with age(contact with oil), seals get weaker. If car wasn't driven for long periods - you may end up with leaking oil from tranny, diff, engine.
If I was buying again - I would look at OWNER that did all needed maintenance and wouldn't look at odometer.

Why do you want a GTR? I would think maintaining that thing would be much harder then a 7 since it was produced here, just digging yourself into a bigger hole?

1993 R1 from VIP
I just recently purchased the '93 Black R1 from VIP. It's the one just after the one your looking at. Let me know if you would be interested in this one instead. It's completely stock except New: Kenesis Racing 18" wheels and tires, HKS adjustable coilovers and greddy muffler. Email at fixa1@aol.com

The price that VIP is asking seems a little overpriced, and I doubt they will lower it because of who their clientele is. I paid $23k for mine which had 8,900 miles and had been garage kept its whole life. And it's an R1.
There are some good pristine FDs out there, you just have to be patient. I kept my eyes out for a long time and when I had the money and the deal became available I was finally able to buy the car I had been dreaming about for many many years.
That said, my ideal flavor was the black & tan like you're looking at now. However mine was red w/ black interior. I was more concerned about the quality of the car, not the color so I 'settled' for the red & black combo. Now that I have it, my tastes have changed. I LOVE the red....it's beautiful, eye-catching, and everyone mentions how great the color looks. It was/is completely stock because I didn't want one that had been modified. Not for concerns about value, but because I wanted to make sure it had been properly cared for and was as close to new quality as possible. I will modify it, not necessarily for performance, but for longevity purposes. So, plans are in place to upgrade the air intake & intercooler, downpipe & catback. The main purpose is to keep the engine in good shape for as long as possible...these mods should reduce the heat which is the rotary's archenemy.
Also, I bought mine out of state and forked out the money to have it shipped from VA to AZ. Oh, and if you do ship yours back (whether you buy the one you listed or another one from even farther away) make sure you get an enclosed carrier. It's extra money but worth it to not have your precious baby sit under some other car that may leak oil or other items onto it and also not have to endure the elements on its long journey home.
All that said, don't feel that you have to rush and buy this one because you haven't seen any others with as low miles. If you're patient, you can find very good condition FDs....they just aren't out there everyday.
Good luck, and keep us posted on what you end up with

I am reconsidering buying the rx7 now. It is not about the expense of the maintenance, its the pain of having to do it with no rotary shops in Utah. If I tried to work on it myself, I'd mess it up more. I'd end up kicking it.
Also, the person who bought the last Rx-7 from VIP is wanting to get rid of it already. Whoah. Bad thing to me.

Racecar - Formula 2000
That may be more of a reflection of the type of person (no reflection on you, you are being cautious and learning about the FD) who has the money to buy a car from VIP w/o knowing anything much about it. I don't think that reflects badly on VIP at all, just on their clientele.

Good Luck. I too waiting (10years) to get the right FD for me.
I picked up a Silver on black with only 37K miles. Car was all factory with some small changes like rotors, brake lines, springs, and rims. To buy a low mileage car you first need to decide on a color you really want. Then work form there. The Silver on Black and the yellow on black is harder to find and more desirable as I have been told.
Check out Speed For Sale as they have a sweet white Fd right now.

Going by what I am hearing you will have to pay 18-28K for the car you want. More on the 22-28K side unless you get lucky.
Good Luck
