Talking A few winter startup pics, with new shoes

Today I did my weekly startup of my FD. I let her warm up for ~15 minutes about once a week. Anyway, I just got my new wheels/tires mounted yesterday, so decided to back it out of the garage for a few pics. Sorry its so dirty, just been in the garage past couple months. Wheels are SSR GT2s, 18x9.5 +50 all around. Tires are 265/35 Kumho MXs. Now I am very picky when it comes to wheels, Ive bought and sold more sets than I can think of.. but I really love these. I think these SSRs are going to be some keepers Let me know what you think.

Those wheels look so sweet on your FD. I couldn't decide on which ones I wanted on mine but after seeing your's my mind is made up. Quality at a resonable price. Congrats!

Damn! Those look REALLY nice.

You know, I keep coming back to the 5 spoke design. I really do like the stock wheels but I want to go to 18" in something. I've thought I like the 'mesh design' like FIKSE FM10 or RACING HART C2 or KOENIG IMAGINE or ENKEI AEGIS, but....somehow when I see them on an FD I grow...wary of them after a while.

These wheels just kick ***.

Did you have to roll your front fenders to fit those beastly 265s in there?

Thanks, I agree about the 5-spoke look. I am also a fan of meshies, some nice Volk GTUs (which Ive had before) or Aegis, but 5-spokes are just a nice classy look that I dont seem to get bored of.

I havent driven any on these wheels yet, but I do plan to roll the fenders just for safety. I pulled my passenger fender out slightly on my old 255/40r17s, I dont want to take that chance again.

Tech tip 101...

Letting the engine sit up and idle is the worst thing you can do to a rotary while storing it over the winter. You multiply the formation of carbon build-up this way because of the incomplete burn of the fuel/air mixture at such a low rpm. What your doing with your process is basically granny driving the engine while it's stationary. What you should be doing is when the engine warms up fully, red line it a couple times till the black smoke clears out the tail pipe. This works a ton better than just letting it sit there idling. You have to build up the heat inside the combustion chamber to burn away the carbon deposits.

Oh yea... the wheels are tight.

love those wheels.... they look similar to the 99spec 17" wheels which i have (however i need a wider tire in the rear) so i may move over to these. i have a set of SSR's comps. on my miata and they were one of the lightest rims i could find at the time. i wonder if the gt2's are made using the same process... do you know what they weigh? -heath

I am a big big fan of mesh wheels (currently run Fikse FM-10's) but I must admit these wheels look very clean and not ricey at all. Conrats on a god purchase.

Thanks, I do redline it about half a dozen times once fully warmed up. Ideally I would like to drive it to blow it out, but I refuse to take it out on the snow/salt covered roads. I know about the carbon deposit buildup, but I still think this would be better than having to prep the car to not be started for ~4 months.

As far as wheel weights, for the 18x9.5 that I have, they weigh in at ~19lbs I believe. My rear diffuser is a RE street diffuser.

I just had 17s, IMO a nice 5-spoke 18 fits the FD a little better, but we all have our different opinions As for carlisle, is it still at Carlisle this year? I know 2-3 years ago there was just chaos there, and from what I heard the show wasnt going to be allowed to be held there anymore.

Looks very nice!!

I think 5 spoke rims (the good ones, ssr, enkei, racing harts etc) look better than any other rim for the FD IMO.

Thanks guys. The only other exterior mod that will be going on the car is a set of feed sideskirts. Then I will be going to work on the engine bay, polishing, powdercoating, and a set of BNRs

I ordered mine fro Tirerack, but I know they had a limited number left, and I dont even see them listed on their website anymore. Maybe give Conner a call and see if they have any more available.
