FD3S Road Trip: 5,633km from Malaysia to Northern Thailand

Just sharing a road trip I did with the FD3S RX-7 a few months ago. I drove from the capital of Malaysia, i.e. Kuala Lumpur to do the infamous 4,088 corners of the Mae Hong Son loop located in Northern Thailand, just right next to the border to Myanmar.

The car traveled 5,633 kms on this trip spanning 12 days.

It’s an absolute bliss driving on Thailand roads (well except in downtown Bangkok). Their driving etiquette is much better than Malaysians. We have a lot to learn on this. The RX-7 has transverse various types of roads: highways, rural roads, dirt road, off-road, b-roads, mountain pass, wooden bridges and even crossed a small stream!

The sights along the way are just truly amazing. Too many to mention but among some of the notable mentions are Ban Rak Thai, Su Tong Pae Bamboo Bridge, Huay Pu Keng Kayan Long Neck Village and Tham Nam Lot. Oh and getting soaked in cold freezing water at the Mok Fa waterfall.

The highlight is of course driving the whole loop of Mae Sariang – Mae Hong Son – Pai with a total of 4,088 corners. The roads here are amazing; sharp corners, sweeping bends, hairpin turns, you name it, they have it. Some corners have unbelievable elevation changes, going downhill on a hairpin turn and when I look up, I can see other cars trailing me 1.5 storeys higher up!

The irony with driving the RX-7 is that many are waiting to see it fail. But the car proved otherwise. It never skipped a beat. It just goes on and on everyday. Doing this has made me found new respect and love for the RX-7. What a car!

Beautiful! My wife and I went to Chaing Mai and Phuket for our honeymoon and really enjoyed it. Very nice people, food, and the scenery. The little old ladies on scooters that were blasting down the mountain roads taking blind turns without a care in the world really blew my mind, those Thai’s are FEARLESS lol.

I can only imagine how fun it would be to have an fd on those roads, you’re a lucky man!

Ls3rx-7, I drove my S2000 to Phuket in 2019. That's a 2,300km journey.
Next week I am doing another trip to Thailand in my RX-7 albeit a much shorter journey than previous.
