The FD wins again!

FD wins the street class (140 or higher treadwear tires) against the Evo, STi and 350Z

Hurray for the 7!

Congrats!

Why was the modded FD slower? Driver? Conditions?

Congrats! I take it you weren't using RA1s? What tires did you opt for?

FD reigns supreme! Yay! Of course, I'm sure mad skillz had something to do with the win as well...right?

The other RX7 was a FC.

I used some brand new full tread 245/45-16 Toyo T1R tires for this event. These are not the tires I planned to use. I ordered some shaved Hankook Z212s specifically for this event but I figured out the day before the event that the shop shaved them out of round very badly. Crazy vibration.

So I ended up going on my STREET street tires. I wasn't too happy about thrashing them on the track but overall I was impressed with the performance of the T1R. Grip wasn't too fantastic (rode in the 350Z equipped with Falken Azenis and he had a lot more grip) but they didn't chunk, held up well and also seemed to give pretty consistant performance. A lot of street tires start to fall off in grip after a few laps. The TOYO T1R tires kept pretty consistant lap after lap.

No mad skillz here... just a lightweight sportscar doing what it should... beating up on the overweight

(now if the driver could just lose some weight....)

Makes me happy to own a FD. I really only care about the street class because thats what i fall in. Love it when a 13 year old car show off these 2000's cars.

Thanks guys! It was a fun event.

dohc-vtec eg:

No Supras this time. Hopefully next time! My experience on the track with Supras has always been that they are modified for 500+ horsepower and they fly past me on the straight and then they hold me up around the turns. But I'm sure a well set up Supra with a good driver would do really well at the track.

Meiogirl:

Thanks, Fisa! Considering that you design video games that's a pretty cool compliment! That was a fun lapping session we had at the last Mazda event at Buttonwillow. I've never had so many cars go off the track in a row right in front of me. I hope I can convince you to bring your FD to some more track days!

GoodfellaFD3S & SayNoToPistons:

My car has a stock exterior and looks just like any other silver touring model. The only slight clues to its modifications are some brake ducts in the front lip and larger brakes under the wheels. You can find some pics in the "Virtual Garage" section of my profile. https://www.rx7club.com/vbgarage.php?do=view&id=25066

alberto mg:

The west coast is a long way for you to come! I hear there is supposed to an east coast event soon organized by the same outfit. I'd love to meet some of you east coast and midwest racers!

Another fun part of the event was meeting the overall winner, "Tarzan". I guess he's pretty famous in Japan for JGTC and drifting. Good driver! Although he is a total NUT. Cracks me up. Well... maybe he's not crazy... just VERY out there Japanese.

Keep the FDs running guys! They're still GREAT sports cars.

I have a little bit of poor quality video on DVD from other events (not this one) but even though I have a DVD drive on my computer I don't yet have any software for putting it on my computer or editing it. Any computer saavy members out there know a good place to download free software for this? Sorry for being the techno-peasant that I am.

Yes! It's been too long. Any ETA on your return to the world of track days? And you did some nice mods while your car was down, right?

nice job! so is that just like normal open tracking but with timing thrown in for competition? we do that on east coast too (M club, EMRA, etc).
what shox and springs do you run? you would have kicked more butt with R compounds. oh well. do you feel like you need a wing at speeds over 140? when i was doing that speed at ponoco, car didn't feel great. i attributed that to stock old shocks and springs and/or lack of wing. just curious. thanks and congrats!!!
