fd vs. 88 mustang gt cobra

I want to know from some one with experience how a fd would hold up against a 88 gt cobra in a straight line. A friend of mine used to have one and it was one of the ballsiest cars i've ever been in.

Don't think there is such a thing as a 'gt cobra' let alone a cobra from '88. A stock '88 GT has less power(215hp?) and more weight than a stock FD and would be no contest. Not even close.

That is a seriously vague question, most Fox body Mustangs I see now are either huge piles of junk.. or very nice and very modified. Especially an 88 Cobra.. I can't remember the last time I saw a Fox body Cobra, think I have only seen one twice at most. Most of the guys who have those take great care of them.. be very careful, a Fox body Mustang set up for drag racing can be EXTREMELY fast in a straight line. Stock vs. stock I don't know..what was the HP rating on the Cobras?

BTW.
I am voting that all these xxx car vs. FD go in the lounge, this is junk that is littering up the 3rd gen area.

I'm sorry about posting in here it just seemed that since I was talking about a fd I should put it in here. G ahead and move it. Also he picked up the car in 98 and the origional owner had taken really good care of it. It was pretty much stock and I don't know for sure if it was a gt cobra but it was an '88 mustang cobra for sure.

No worries, it wasn't directed towards you as much as just a general comment.. seems like 20% of the new topics are "which car is faster?" Try and do some searching on the web though, you should be able to find some #'s for the Cobra's from that era.. I am not sure what they are. I do know that the Fox body's are fairly light.. could be a good race. A well running FD will run low 5's to 60 and well into the 13's in the 1/4 with a decent driver..stock that is.

Nope couldn't have been a '88 mustang cobra, they only made mustang cobras in the'87-'93 body style in '93.. So there is no way it is a '88 mustang gt cobra, maybe a '88 mustang though, or a '88 stang with '93 cobra ground effects, etc. Also they only made the '93 mustang cobra in black, teal, and red. And the cobra models I believe are still a 302, but with a different intake manifold, bigger roller rockers and maybe gt40 heads or something. The heads I am unsure about. And of course upgraded suspension, ground effects, and 17" wheels. I know I am right on the year thing though, because my brother has owned several fox body's and I have read a ton of books on them. I would say you would be able to take him in a FD if his car is even a '93 mustang cobra, but alot of depends on how well you can drive.. And if his car is bone stock or not..

the fox body mustang cobra's were only availible in 1993,so the 88 was a mustang gt. stock for stock a FD will blow it away! before i bought my rx-7's i was about to buy a 88 mustang gt,but too many of my friends have them!

In Canada, Ford designated the Mustang GT as "Cobra", not to be confused with the SVT Cobra models.

Ah ha... Thanks for the insight.. So that means it's really just the same as a U.S. Spec '88 mustang GT?? If this is correct than you should have him definately...

I didn't know that, I thought that I'd seen both '88 gt's and cobras

I agree with what has been said about the fox body mustangs. I owned two of them before I bought my 93 RX. My last mustang was a 93 GT Convertible. I would say that stock vs. stock my 7 would be able to take a fox body. I had a vortech, exhaust and 3.55 gears in the stang and was able to go into the low 12's with ease. All for about $4k for the mods. Reliable as hell also! I think mods for a 7 are crazy as far as some of the pricing goes. Then there's the reliability factor after the mods are done. I like the 7 because it's different and you don't see them everywhere like you would with a camaro or mustang. I'm just glad that I don't have to rely on the 7 as a daily driver. If so I'd be trading for something else.

I've seen a couple for sale and theres 1 cobra fox body that drives by my office a lot. So if I'am day dreaming or hes a ricer in a domestic body I have no idea. And also I was wondering when somebody says they pull 12's easy in the 1/4, does that mean its a 10 sec car since it was "easy" to reach 12's. This comment is not directed to the post way above. This sometimes irrates me when people are bragging about cars. If it was so easy to reach that time then it should be at least 1 sec quicker if he did a hard run...I dont get it?
