Fd revival project- coolant

So i just bought this 94 manual trans touring fd
The guy i bought if from let it sit sometime after it got a rebuild.
I've read threads on starting a rotary after sitting and im take those steps.
But the issue comes to the coolant system.
Can I and should I try to somehow clean it out without starting the car?
A friend suggested i remove thermostat and run a hose to try and remove as much as i can before doing a real cleaning.

Wow, that looks terrible!

I would try and fill it with water, see if it will dilute those crystals. Then empty it out.

Read up online, there are a number of general write-ups for flushing and filling a coolant system. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator and another one on the bottom of the engine - it's on the driver's side of the engine at the bottom of the middle iron housing, it's a 14mm bolt.

I hope the engine is good after sitting. If you don't have a Lisle coolant funnel, get one. Also, I would crank the motor with the EGI fuse out to build oil pressure before you start the engine for the first time.

Thanks for reply dale
Yup well thats what $500 gets you

Ill try try filling and draining first.

So far i have poured mmo and hand turned engine a few times and replaced oil and filter

I want to clear it as best before actually trying to start it
then do a real coolant flush

You bought the car for $500? If so, HOLY CRAP.

Yes i kid you not
he was gonna donate the car but just decided
To sell it to me for $500

In a case this severe, I would definitely give the hose method a try. You're going to be spending an excruciating amount of time on trying to flush it otherwise. Then of course once you've done what you can with that technique, put the thermostat back in and run some distilled water through it with the flush additive that Prestone and probably others make. Even once the system is clean I'd be worried about the amount of corrosion that could already be present. In any case, you scored the deal of a lifetime if you really got an FD for $500.

Mr357
i will try it then. I have thought about the possible erosion

i have a rebuild planned in the summer for sure

Thanks. It honestly is a lifetime deal
Hope i can bring this beast back to life

wow $500 FD what times we live in!

I'd pull the radiator out along with the thermostat and water pump housing complete out from the engine flush them clean outside and hose the engine directly from the front cover water ports and unplugging the engine drain bolt.

rattlehead 04-17-18 11:01 PM

Wild times. Still cant believe it myself when i walk out and see it:lol:

So to be clear take out the radiator completely
i suppsose that would make it easier

And the engine bold must be the same one dale mentioned

Hose goes into front housing and i catch all the crap from the engine drain bolt in the back?

neit_jnf 04-18-18 08:58 AM

not really easier, removing the radiator and water pump housing requires quite some effort and care but I think in the end you end up with a better job done. That way you can decide if reusing the radiator or getting a new one.

there's no coolant drain port in the back of the engine, it's on the middle plate between the spark plugs way down.

OR you could start by just removing the water pump and thermostat and do your flushing from there.

Even if you have to totally replace the engine, radiator, etc., you are way ahead of the game. Fantastic!

nashman69g 04-25-18 10:16 PM

I love to see the rest of the car to see deal you got for $500!!

rattlehead 04-26-18 12:04 AM

This is pretty much it. the body is straight, just some moss on the back. all stock except for the exhaust. interior is pretty much complete aside from something above the stereo missing
