Thumbs up FD report After 3 weeks and 600 miles

Hello All,

So I have now owned my first FD for just over 3 weeks now. Thought I'd give a quick boring report. I am not new to rotary's having owned a 1990 Turbo II before and currently have a 1974 RX4 Coupe. I had never driven an FD before this.

My FD:
1993 FD Silver on Red Leather
14800 current original miles on motor and body
100% Stock minus the Tri-Point AST I just changed out and a few tie-wraps on some vacuum hoses by KDR
It is still on the original tires, brakes, plugs etc... (Yes I am changing the tiers but keeping the originals for future shows)
Still have the factory clear plastic on the passenger floor under the mat that says "Dealer must remove before delivery"

Car was fully tested by KDROTARY (Dave) and found to be authentic and original in every way. He tested each rotor with the result of the same 112 pounds pressure on each.

So after some 700 miles and just over 3 weeks of usage... I can report the following:

-The car runs like a charm and needs absolutely nothing mechanically
-Starts right up each time and the RPMs settle down right after a few seconds
-nothing shakes or rattles
-transmission is smooth in every gear, up or down
-no 3000 RPM hesitation, not even a hint of it even while looking for it
-Cosmetics wise there are some very minor imperfections in the paint and one small ding that I will have removed with out painting.
-the interior is perfect with no 93 trim peeling in the center stack area
-minor peeling on the driver door black trim handle and switch part (I have ordered a complete new stock part-dam expensive I have to say )
-Only the driver seat has some minor wear on and only on the outer bolster (I am sourcing a new OEM seat cover or complete seat-red 93 if anyone has one, a JDM passenger seat will do as well)

My only plans for the car are nothing else except some new MAG's and Tires (keeping the original stock units aside). It will remain in stock form for another 15 years.

I have forgotten how quiet, smooth and a pleasure it is to drive a modern day STOCK rotary.

So in the end I don't really have much to report except that everything is running perfectly. I know you are all thinking and saying "wont be for long" but I expect to post a similar update in another few months with only the mileage having changed.

Three last words, this car is like "SEX ON WHEELS".

Regards

Max

Amen, I've had mine now for around 3 and a half months as a daily driver and the only problems I've had with it are gas haha.

Since you have rotary turbo experience, and you are aware that heat is a major issue contributing to the degradation of many components, I would definitely replace the radiator and stock pre-cat with an upgraded Koyo radiator and a SS downpipe from Bonez or some other reputable manf. This will lower the "overall" heat build up in the engine and help the motor and turbos last longer.

Also, even though the car is low mileage, I would still replace the plugs and wires for new ones; Magnecor or something good that is NOT 15 years old.

I would also replace rubber coolant hoses to both the radiator AND the turbos. 15 years means rubber gets hard and then it can break more easily. Would be really sad if while driving your "perfectly" running FD on the hwy and a hard coolant hose busts and you loose allot of coolant and your motor overheats too much before you can pull off the road...

And.. the fuel pulsation dampner .. the one that causes fires.. might be a good idea to replace, then a new fuel filter, and maybe have those original 15 year old injectors cleaned

And just remember, now that you have the car and are putting more miles on it, things will wear out quicker since it's being driven more.

After that, I wouldn't be too paranoid Oh, and that stuff would be $1K roughly to buy parts for - but she's worth it

I have to agree a little..I would say at the very least buy some heat wrap..reducing the heat in a rotary engine can save a very large amount of engine life..

there's a reason reliability mods are called reliability mods. do them and you WILL have the car for another 15 years.

Mods

Hello All,

I was dead set on no mods as I am with all my cars. I did have KDR change some of the hoses for new OEM ones as he suggested it. I opted for OEM ones in place of upgraded as it lasted 15 years so I figured new ones would last another 15. WIth the amount of miles I plan on per year, which should be at a max of 4000 I am not sure if I need mods.

Now, after my 3 weeks and 600 miles I do have to admit I find the engine bay gets dam hot. I am now reconsidering my position on a cat back. I though of getting a JDM unit that looks stock but does not have the insides that block up the American one. Not sure here. In either case, I will spend some time with the car first and understand better what is what before making changes.

Thanks

Max
