FD killing batteries, what relay???

well i have been having a preblem with my car killing batteries... i am not too sure what is wrong with it... i do know that the car was jump started with + on - and - on +... yeah i know i know, never let a friend help jump your FD...

anyway, all that i found that it did is blow the "Main" fuse (120)... i replaced it and now it runs just fine, just kills optima yellow tops like they are going out of style...

to be honest no i have not... but i just thought that would be a waste of time due to the fact that i can drive anywhere for any amount of time and have no problems until i shut her off...

yea but the diode in the alternator may have been fried. disconnect the neg terminal. get an multi meter that will read amps. connect the + lead on the multi meter to the disconnected neg batt terminal. connect the neg lead on the multi meter to the neg post on the battery and see what the readings are. anything over.5 amps will kill a batt in a few days. have someone disconnect the alt plug and see if it drops. if not just hunt fuses by pulling them until the amp draw goes down. that is the system with a prob. make sure all the lights and stuff are off when testing.

If you go to AutoZone they have a portable cart that can test your battery and also see if your alternator is putting out enough juice. They should be able to do this even though you don't have one of their batteries.

My guess though is that you have a short somewhere that is killing your batteries. Shorts can be a bitch to find.

same thing happened to my car w/the reversed juper cable syndrome, but now my starter runs w/the key in the on position . w/the car running the starter still stays running.i pulled the starter wire off the solinoid and have juice in the wire w/the key on. pulled relays and fuses and still does the same thing.if you make any progress on your ride let me know what you find or if anyone else has suggestions drop me a line.later , cliff

This is just another experience of an FD that killed batteries, but the event that caused the problem is not the same. I am not sure if this will help or not, but it might be worth a test. You can check the "dark current" -- shut car off, disconnect one wire from battery, connect an amp meter between the battery and the disconnected battery wire to read current, should be below 0.5 amps. Then remove the fuse for the stereo and see if the dark current drops significantly -- if it does, your stereo has a short.

My experience:
I replaced the rear speakers, and soon after the stereo (still stock at the time of this incident) shorted out. I found that one (or both?) of the speaker wires connected to the back of the speaker had touched part of the body. I bent the speaker terminals away from the body and put everything back together. Everything seemed to work fine, but my battery would drain quickly with the car parked. I replaced the stereo with an aftermarket unit and the battery drain problem went away. I believe that something in the stock stereo must have shorted out from the speaker short incident. I haven't had any trouble with it since I replaced the stereo.

I had a battery problem also. my problem was in the air/smog pump electronics. when the car was off the air pump electronic clutch was shorting out and causing a drain on the battery.
