The FD just F**ks people up!
The FD just F**ks people up!
Whilst waiting in line to exit a restaurant the other day, I noticed a group of guys looking at my car. These are all guys in the late teens early twentys by their looks.
As I go outside I pass by them and overhear comments like, "I think it is called an MX5R or something like that..." and "they only made those for a year or so".....
Now, I understand that my car has no badges that SAY it is an RX-7, but criminy....give me a break! The same thing happened once when I first got my car, some guys were trying to say it was "the new 6 speed Miata hardtop".
Everytime this happens I don't know if I am overall pleased or displeased. On the one hand I like the fact that this just shows the rarity of the car, you don't see them at every stop light. On the other hand you end up getting into this big discussion sometimes about features of the car, usually with these same guys that know nothing about it, and the inevitable questions about the motor arise, and the rotary is just seemingly beyond some people's comprehension. I remember one guy just absolutely perplexed, he kept saying **** like, "Oh come ON! It has GOT to have pistons!"
The deal is, couple a fairly rare car that has a very unique engine, and the end result is some people just end up sort of grunting and dismissing it, I have heard comments like, "Well, no wonder they discontinued it...."
I mean when someone actually has to ask, "Is that thing fast at all?" you know they just don't have a clue!

Hey Zoom......
I was out west, at the Outback Steakhouse.
There are those that know, but my point is that minority of people that just don't have a clue, I mean not an inkling of what a 3rd gen is......

parked at applebes one time.. i went inside, while my freind was on his way in, he heard a couple guys talking... one said "what is it?" his buddy looked at him and said "I dunno but I wanna steal it!".. needless to say, I went to the window of the restraunt and made sure the alarm was on hehe.
My favorite is "oh yeah, RX7; Does that STILL have the rotary engine?" as if its some sort of dinosaur. Nobody asks corvette owners if it "still has pushrods". My response of "yes it does" is usually followed by some horror story about their uncle who has a first gen "that just died" or "needed a new motor every 25k" according some shady mazda service dept.
After years of hearing silly myths about how Macintosh computers won't do this and can't do that... i can say that RX7s are nearly the same. So many myths about them are out there, and Mazda hasn't done much to straighten them out (and many of them are actually true in the FDs case) so many folks shy away. Its really too bad.

but our cars do revv forever. Even in idle, our rotors and E-shaft are "revolving." So in essence, we do revv forever
And on a sidenote, i find it annoying when they ask what kind of turbo i have in my Miata. i get that **** allll day long. that, or they ask if its turbo'ed after ive stepped on the gas, and the bov does its magic.

Believe it or not I've only had one firson in 4 years that thought my car was a Probe. A probe???
They do have somewhat (and I mean somewhat) similar lines but I ws pretty insulted. Everyone else is just like "Wow, RX7!!!" I have the stock RX7 badge and my license plate says "KWIK RX7" - guess it gives it away.

I just resist the urge to try to downplay a porsche, even a 944, because it makes me look like an arrogrant ***
