FD going 180mph on a Mexican Highway - VIDEO

Ok, people keep telling me I need to post this video under a different title. I guess "180mph" attracts more interest.

I think the top speed is a little after 3 minutes into this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAgSkdtA7Iw

Sorry about the poor sound quality.

For more info about this event and more video linksplease see the thread about the race:

Enjoy,

John

You're brave for taking your 7 into Mexico. The highway looks like it is well kept though. Nice run!

There were a lot of Mexican High Patrol around... this is a legal road race and they help shut down the roads... it's nice to be on the same side as the Highway Patrol for once!

Yeah, what a ride! Wish I had those type of roads to WOT my 93 FD too! Are you running single or twin turbos?

Thanks for the posting, would have loved to see a PIP (picture in picture) on the video showing boost levels, RPM and MPH. But was a real pumping run.

John,

I'm wondering how the car felt at 180 mph? Did it feel solid? Did you do anything to the car to keep it from getting light at high speeds?

Thanks, Adam

Adam, back in my younger crazier days I went 170+ mph twice, once out in OK and once in TX. Stock bodied R1, car felt very stable at those speeds. By comparison, a good friend's base model FD with no front lip or rear wing felt very unstable on those same roads at speeds above 140ish mph.

Thanks, Adam
The car starts to feel a little bit light over 165mph but nothing too bad. Other than some custom brake ducts the aero on the car is 100% stock with no rear spoiler. Stock ride height with stock R1 shocks and springs for this event.

The car has a single turbo and at this event is was tuned very conservatively so that I could run reliably on Mexican pump gas. I think it was making about 330rwhp at 15psi.

How would a touring feel at 180mph with sunroof open? =]

Also, at around 8:48 I start to see some skid marks, they go for a little long while and then all of a sudden they go off the road. O_O reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huXKM...eature=related

Yeah it takes some ***** to run your 7 in Mexico. But does look like an awesome road that was maintained well.

What about overheating issues at those constant RPM's? Did you encounter any of that?

It kind of sounds like you had a window cracked in the video. That must have been some intense wind! haha

any data logged/recorded from any of the runs? would love to see what the readout is of such sustained high speeds (especially considering that i love running top end).

2 cameras for 2 separate videos. Overlay the dash video in post processing.

I did not do any datalogging for this event. Engine temperatures stayed normal the entire three days.
