Question Fans came on with engine off????

Just had my fans come on while I was sitting in the car with the engine Off. Never had this happen before. I know the car wasn't hot. I was, however, messing with some electrical wiring trying to test my window motor. Ignition was on.

Does something trigger the fans to turn on like a blown fuse or shorting a wire etc??

Thanks

You probably grounded a wire that is related to the coolant thermoswitch circuit or the coolant temp sensor circuit, either of which triggers the ECU to run the "10 minute cool-down sequence", which runs the fans on low speed for 10 minutes after the car is turned off.

Thanks! I wouldn't mind the fans runing after shutdown -- just surprised to have it happen.

Actually, with the key in the ON position, the fans will come on when the thermostat opens. After driving and shutting down, the engine heat soaks from the lack of ventilation around the engine. With the increase in temperature, the thermostat opens completing the circuit to turn on the fans. I usually open my hood after a hard drive and leave the keys to the ON position to help cool things down.

...me too... Park in the garage, lift the hood, leave the key on (usually 10 minutes) and, depending on how hot the engine is, within few seconds to 40/50 seconds, they come on...

I guess if you had driven the car and then started working on it with the key on, the fans would come on because of the heat soak...
