Unhappy Fan relay short, what the hell????

ALNY93R1 and myself spent the weekend doing a turbo swap/non seq. conversion. Once everything was back together, I started it. The car ran fine, let it warm up and it seemed ok. So I decide to go home. I drove about 3 or 4 blocks, boosted it a little to see how it felt and it was nice. I pulled over at a gas station to make a phone call and thats when i noticed the interior lights go a little dim. I gave it some gas and the lights lit up to normal. Then I saw smoke coming from under the hood. Shut it off. Poped the hood and found the fan relays on fire. It spread to the fender liner and pretty much burned that side of the wires, relays, liner and air filter. What the hell happened? I dont have my FSM(its at AL's place) so i dont know what the relays do - aside from the fans but that cant be it. I cant think of any reason for the short other than bare wires touching or the non seq. conversion?
the fucked up thing about it is, I could have prevented it by:
1) Making sure all the connections were good
2) Having a fire extinguisher in the car(never thought I would need one - even with all the stories and everyone's experience)

Since it was at night and it was covered in the powder from the exinguisher I coulnt really see very much. I dont think theres that much damage. I hope the paint is ok. I'll get a better idea this weekend. Hopefully i'll have the parts by then.
