Fan electric motor burnt.

I was driving to work this morning nad I saw an strange temp. increment (230 °F), so I stopped the car and took a look under the hood, there was a burnt plastic odor and one of my fans (driver side) was not functioning.
HOLY CRAP!

I used my fans all time (A/C fusible out) to keep my temps down the last two weeks.

Maybe too much work for them?

I checked the Mazdatrix price list and the fan motor is $198

Should I buy the new one?

I´m sad.

That's too bad, at least you caught it before it badly overheated. There was a fan mod post last week in which there was a debate over running the fans all the time (which I don't think is necessary or desirable). I guess your experience indicates that running them constantly is not reliable.

My local Mazda dealer wants $300 a popc Ifd love to find a write up on someone that has done a fan replacement mod that has not only upgraded the flow, but has upgraded the quality of the fan to last a life time.

The fans are about close to $200 new from Mazda but you might be able to find one used from one of the tuners or Mazda yards (I got one from Pettit). The fans should not be on all the time. The motor will make more power and get better mileage if it operates at the proper temps (not colder). I do think a 5-10 minute timer on the fans when the car is turned off is a good idea to keep underhood temps down.

Make sure to get a new fan asap since now you have no redundant backup.

My country is tropical and very hot so I was trying to keep the temp around 190°F.

a few thoughts on fans...i've dealt with this a ton lately.

You cannot reduce engine temps below their optimal range with fans alone.

Running the fans constantly will wear them out faster but they're cheaper than motors.

Fans are $200 new in general.

The FD's fans are very very good. Very big, great flow. Haven't seen an 'upgrade' for em yet.

Be very careful with aftermarket ICs pressing on the plastic of the fans -if your fan jams it will short the motor which could short the relays which can burn wires in the fan system which is a pain in the ***. don't ask how i know.

Relocating the battery should make the fans a little more effective -one less thing they have to cool.

BTW, replacing the fan motor is a pretty easy do it yourself job.

It will take longer for the car to warm up with the fans on. Also the extra electrical load will cause a slight loss in hp due to additional drag on the alternator. There should be no reason to run the fans all the time if your temp sensor is working. They will turn on automatically when they are needed. I might agree if you're running more hp that stock (and running the stock radiator) since this will reject more heat into the cooling system. They are indeed very easy to change out.

Fellows, please apologizes me since my electric fan motor does not burnt because use it all the time, the cause was one of the two iron hooks-screws (the left one) that goes through the upper baterry holder, it was loose and felt down just over the fan, its blocked the fan and stop the motor causing the damage.

Sorry for not inform it ASAP.

That's how mine went bad. When I pulled out the intercooler, I found a long bolt stuck in the fan blade to the shroud. It looks like the bolt used to hold the intercooler cross-over pipe. Appears that the fan was that way when I bought it. I never got any overheating with 1 fan but was quite shocked when I saw it jammed...

Well, the center of the fan was melted too. I replace it.

$200 for the fan motor.
$35 for the fan.

Why the fan motor fuse or relay did not burn?

That's a good question. My car did not burn out a fuse either. You would think this is what a fuse is designed for. I got another fan motor used from Pettit for $100 and it's been fine since.

Do a search on my screen name you will find all the info you could ever want about ANY overheating topic. I replaced my drivers side fan motor 2 times in the last 7 months. Its been a real PIA.

You need to take everything apart, when my IC, battery and intake were removed you can see that my shroud was warped and pressed down on the fan blade causing it to burn out.

My KOYO had alot to do with this, the pressure from my intercooler and KOYO was alot.
