Usually some signs are:

1. Smoke under boost
2. Less power with the rest of the system working properly

Most people don't notice a problem unless there is excessive smoke coming out of the exhaust under boost.

Well my issue is this. Its off and on. I had an issue once where there was alot of excessive smoke from under the hood which was alot worse under boost like you say. I shut down drove it again next day and has been just fine ever since. I sometimes randomly get periods of less boost. Also at high RPM I barly get any boost at all. Most of these issues occur after using the car for long duration. Could this possibly be a failing secondary turbo?

Sounds more like oil leaks combined with some solenoid/actuator issues.

after it blew excessive smoke from under the hood, did you check the oil level?

The boost issue sounds like a vac leak or failing solenoids. My friends FD had an issue where the turbos would drip oil on the downpipe in 1-2 minute intervals. We never resolved the issue, but believe it was related to either a shotty turbo rebuild or shotty installation(reusing crush washers, not properly tightening the oil lines, etc)
