what I think the stock antena looks like ****, the damn thing rises up WAY to much. I am gonna get rid of it one of these days, shave it off or something. Although I would never replace it with one of those pig tail thingys I see around if thats what you talkin about.

You want in on a little secret? The stock exterior antenna is for AM reception. Look at the TOP of the hatch glass. See that zig zagging wire? That's your FM antenna.

Just a question: if the power antenna is just for AM, how come I get absolutely no FM reception without it going up after I disconnected the connector to the power antenna? I did this a few months back when my antenna stopped working and I didn't enjoy the grinding sound it makes when I turn on the radio.

Because he got it BassAckwords - the mast is for WEAK signals and the Squiglly line is for STRONG Signals.
Unless you are VERY close to the Transmitter the FM signals will be relativly weak - AM Signals have a MUCH longer range and are usually Stronger.

that maxpesce explanation sounds better. i can second rob's statement, you will get crappy fm signals with that mast down...we guarentee it.

I know someone somewhere somehow used that wire primarily for FM and got good reception, and I can't find the link . I didn't do it because back when I changed my radio, I didn't know about that wire. and I KNOW this CAN work because I DID have an old car with only an in glass antenna and it got very good reception.
