An FD is not a practical car for college.

If you must spend $23k, you can now find ~50k mile E39 M5s for around that price.

(And despite what others have said, KBB is actually pretty accurate for these cars. It does not give a value that most owners think their car is worth, but that is a different story.)

I know you just did not compare a Touring Model with a CYM, right?
you are correct. I was simply showing that there are indeed clean, reasonable mileage FDs out there for under 20g and close to KBB

maybe you should have checked KBB. How much did you pay for that molested, FD? and how many miles are on it?

The only thing epic in this thread is sunburn's ego.

You get what you pay for chief, if you wanna go the cheap route than, by all means, do it! Don't forget to also purchase all your mods on ebay (those damn tuner shops are out of their minds! selling stuff so expensive!!), and lets not forget... ALSO argue with the senior members about why your car is busted when you post the "my car isn't acting right, somebody fix it for me!" thread...

VanessaVan, good luck with whatever you choose to do. I'd listen to the advice given by some of the more senior members, they are looking out for your best interest. Just, if you do get the FD, please don't cut corners with it!! These vehicles def put out what they take in, multiplied!

I think that i fall into the same position has Van. I traded a 99 civic for my fd and it blew up 3 months after i got it. I did have some buyers remorse, and needed rides for a wile. Now that i Finally have it runnig after it sat for 6 or 7 months. I would say if you do get it i would consider a beater just in case. That first 3 months of driving made me fall in love with the car and would say get it. It really is worth owning. And i was in school at the time.

Check the classified section. FD's are getting cheaper by the minute lately.
what he said.....

oh and btw milage has little to do with the reliability/condition of the car.... its old now and there are just as many problems due to age as there is with mileage with these cars.

Even if it only has 34k miles on it, the seals are still 16 years old.

I agree that the CYM is definitely worth it's value if it's prestine. The main reason why so many car's values go down are because people are letting themselves be low-balled, or are low-balling.

I love my FD, it's a really nice car. Handling is amazing, power is amazing (of course I've gone single turbo), however, I do want to complain about the ride. It's a really rough ride for a daily driver, if only the suspension weren't so stiff. Also, the lack of space also annoys me.

It only allows for one girl. Seriously, a bachelor would want like 1 in the front seat and 3 in the back. Also, it seems that a BMW gets you more "meow", than the FD does. The FD will get you more "cockadoodledoo" than anything else.

I've been in the industry for years and can tell you it's a buyers market out there for sure. Do I really need to tell you the financial breakdown is having a dramatic impact on the price of a 15+ year old sports car? people are looking to earn and save money NOT spend it. In recent months EVERYTHING about the car market has taken a dramatic change.

So thanks for applauding me and don't pay too much for your next car.
Wtf... you're posting with an attitude implying the FD is almost worthless. Granted it's a buyer's market right now, a nice low mileage FD shouldn't be as low as 13k

Either your position on what exactly dictates a "low mileage" FD is skewed, or your overall grasp of the car's worth is just wrong

So what exactly is the mileage of that red one you showed? Cell phone quality pictures don't tell you everything

That fd is worth about $20k, with 100k miles on it 6-7 yrs down the road, it will be worth about $16-17k if the body/engine are still in good shape. The bmw is worth roughly $20k at the current moment, at 100k miles 4-5 years down the road it will be worth $7-9k. However, the maintenance fees along the road will obviously favor the BMW, but not by much with window regulators failing and the digital dash display failing, and likely your climate control. But dont listen to me, what do I know about FD and BMW values

You forgot that the BMW will need at least one new cooling system replacement before 100k miles, two with some bad luck.

It always amazes me how much whining people do about FD maintenance costs when depreciation is usually the most expensive part of owning a car. FDs barely depreciate at all whereas most $15k-$20k cars lose the price of a rebuild in value within a year of buying them.

I have never went on KBB in my entire life, that site is a joke which is why i made that comment.

I wont say my FD is molested, it was a single owner who was a MAZDA MECHANIC. Bought with 67k miles for almost 14k. He originally wanted 16.5k but sold it to me cause i had CASH IN HAND and he needed the money for his wedding.

This was 5 years ago when FD's actually were worth a penny.

I think i got a good catch, hate to break the news to you.

Hmmm depending on the car, if its really cherry mmmm I don't quite think its even. I think it will be as the FD will appreciate in value. If this was a 94 - 95 I would probably recommend that you go for it. I would personally make the trade though. FDs are great. The problem lies with your needs and capabilities. Being a college student isn't going to give you enough time or the resources to properly care for the car. Especially since the car is so low mileage. If I were you, I would give him the car and buy yourself a super cheap beater.

If it will be your only car... don't do it. If you are in a sound and secure financial position, with a safe job and savings accumulated...AND a second car that will be your DD. Then I would say it is a great trade. Clean CYM's don't come up often, and if you kept it low mileage for a few years you will most likely get more than $20k for the car at that time because it is such a scarce example.

I think the value Gordon is speaking of, would take awhile to convert to cash in todays environment. I do agree that an excellent CYM R1 should be worth more than $20k or around that number, but I do not agree that you could sell one for that within 3 months.

If you needed to liquidate, the 325 would get you more money, faster, than the FD. Thus to me it should have a higher value today. Your uncle should throw in a little cash if he is really serious about a trade.

Heh the dream died today. My insurance finally settled my accident.

I was paying $817.12 for half a year on the 325i. Now I have to pay $1906.96.

I just checked up on the rx7. You guys ready? It would cost me $5132 to insure it now.

I used Allstate and had maximum coverage for everything. Anyone have some good suggestions for other companies? I cant lower the coverage my parents say theres no point since it only costs like $60 more.

Suggestions please? My current job wont be able to pay this off.

Suggestions? Buy a moped

On a serious note, that CYM (1 of 350 made) with such low mileage and in stock pristine condition is easily worth over $20k, hands down.

I would shop around for insurance companies. How old are you? If you're under 25 you could get put on your parents plan as a secondary driver and just pay them, that is sometimes cheaper than your own plan.

I sent you a private message here on the forum, could you please shoot me a reply?

Best regards
Charlie

Sorry didnt notice. I sent PM.

I am 18. I am already under my parents insurance :[

I offered to either:

A) Sell the car for a cheaper car with cheaper insurance.

B) Get my own insurance plan with bare minimum coverage.

Replies:

A) NO. BMW=SAFE. [ in reality he wants to maintain the image that we are a well off family with his pretty little MERCEDES BENZ SL500 and mommies fat LEXUS GX470.. too bad thats considered average around here -.- ]

B) If I get my own I have to get maximum coverage. Or he will take my car. "Better safe than sorry."

So no insurance suggestions?

If you are 18, it really isn't the right car for you. I guess your insurance company figured that too.

I was lucky enough to do preproduction testing on a racetrack for BMW on that 325 you own. Take that baby out to the track, do some autox or som HPDE events with it. It is a TON of fun...even completely stock! Trust me. We had the 330 out from the same year, they were supposed to be 40 HP different... I think the 325 was actually a little faster around the track (150lbs weight advantage). It CERTAINLY was NOT down 40hp on the 330.

The 2005 325 is a little bit of a diamond in the rough for buyers on there. The next year they went to the N54 engine in the 328 and the N54 FI engine in the 335. I think the N54 that was in the 328 in 2006 was exactly the same as the N54 in the 325 the previous year. Thus the 325 in 2005 was putting down around 240hp. With a little more aggressive tires on that thing it would have been even more fun. But completely stock it could certainly hold it's own. A racecar driver that had owned an e28M5 for 10 years as his dd, parked it and bought the 325 after driving it in our sessions.

It really was a great car, SUPER nice for an 18 year old, but also a GREAT car to use to get into performance driving and really learn the ropes before stepping into a much less user friendly sports car like the FD. Sell the track time to your parents as "driver education" .

I agree it should be worth that... I dont think you could get that within 3 months and thus don't believe it should be valued that high currently. That is my story and I am sticking to it. Eventually we will see a car like that fetch a huge price at auction when we are all old and gray.

shop around for insurance

after an accident, insurance companies tend to raise their client's rate by rediculous amount to kick them out. check with Progressive, AIG , or other reputable but nothing like state farm, all state, farmers.. those are the ******** when u have an accident

if that doesn't work... personally i would still trade for the FD + some cash for you to get a $2000 beater car to drive around for 3 years and ur record would clear up by then for you to really enjoy the FD at 21 yrs old
