Engine & Tranny is ripped out and ready to be rebuilt...pics!

Welps...

Turbojeff, in his infinite knowledge of ripping 7's apart, did a woozy of a job on my 7 Friday & Saturday.

As most of you know, everything had to be ripped out, and dissasembled completly to the bare bones of the engine and tranny. Jeff is doing a fine job of cleaning up the parts with his pressure-washer to a new appearance, and a large majority of the hoses and what-not will be replaced.

The engine and tranny are currently at Pineapple Racing, OR to be rebuilt with porting, Stage 2 oil mods, etc...etc....although only SORTA.

It's actually being stored in the shop next to them. they weren't there. Hopefully, they just had a problem or something and forgot. Jeff and I drove up for 2 hours from Eugene, OR to Portland. Jeff pretty much drove half of the way to Tacoma, practically.

I must say..this is the first time I've ever seen a car that has a tranny that's almost bigger than the engine.

Tons of pics of the entire process are here:

http://www.imagestation.com/album/pi...71767&start=21

Lifting the engine forward...

Almost out...look at that mess of hoses!!!

The complete assembled engine and tranny with it's subcomponents...

Never undestimate the usefulness of a fully adjustable crutch.

High-power pressure washing... Super clean!

The rat's nest revealed...

Ready to be transported..

All in all, Jeff did an amazing job. All I did pretty much was just take buttloads of pics, and video. But I sure as hell learned alot. More than I would have by using some shop to do the work.

Can't wait till it's all said and done...

Was there something wrong with your engine? I'm in the same boat as you, except I don't have any RX7 experts around to help. My engine is out, mostly disassembled on the garage floor. I need to find a big *** 2 1/8" socket to take off the flywheel (Sears stocks them, but happened to be out of that size, even though they had every other size!).

That crutched worked out nice! I ended up taking my hood off instead.

OMG you took a lot of pics!

People make fun of the crutch, until they see it in action.

Well, dangit, Jeff, I had to do SOMETHING. Oh..and the crutch is da bomb-diggity.

As far as needing a rebuild, the engine had low compression and my y-pipe coupling was leaking air. The turbos looked they didn't need a rebuild, and as Jeff stated , they didn't look like anyone had "got on it" with them.

I just wanted a nice, stable platform to work off of, without any problems to worry about. The car drove fine down the 4 hour stretch that it took me to get to Eugene.

My confidence in the car is at an all time high right now..even if the engine is ripped out.

That'll be gone...replaced with an HKS Downpipe.

I just bought the car in November...it was completly stock. Everything. Not even a different shifter ****.

Now it has Koni Struts /w Eibach Springs, Brembo X/Slotted Rotors, EBC greenstuff pads, and G-Stop Steel Brake lines.

As far as the engine goes, I've got alotta stuff to change. I've got a pretty decent budget to work with, so all of the reliability mods, most of the bolt-ons and and a PFC will be on the car when I'm done with this phase. Possibly a different SMIC if I can spare the change.

It sorta depends on how much I have to spend on the rebuild of the engine and tranny. I have 4k set aside for that, 3k for the engine R&R, and about 3k after that for miscellaneous. That crap builds up quickly, though.

Thanks guys,

It was either this or paying 40k for a 98 Supra TT....I think this is the better deal. I love these cars..they're simply beautiful in design and function.

get Hawk HP+ brake pads! I tried EBC and they are not nearly as great as the Hawk HP+ pads (the initial bite as well as stopping force of the HP+ pads are great!), the Hawk's do give off a lot more dust though.

Hehehehe...

That's Jeff, and the chica is my wife. I didn't do anything but take pictures, hold the tranny, and like shine the light....I was just soaking it all in. If I ever need to rip my engine out again, I sure as hell won't be intimidated after watching everything being taken apart piece by piece. I learned a helluva lot about what does what and what goes where.

I highly suggest everyone do this theirselves, or get someone to help them through the process, because it's a helluva lot better than just taking it to a shop to do it.

I'll look into getting some track pads, later..when the car is actually running.

Wow, those pics are so cool. You're doing exactly what I plan to do, if and when I buy an FD (I change my minds about cars once every 2 weeks or so). I'd like to save up a good amount of money above and beyond the purchase price of the car, so I'll have funding to do all of the stuff you're currently doing. I've already been down the road of "spent all my money on the car, now no $ for mods", and I don't want to play that game again. Your pics have inspired me to continue holding off on my next car until I'm -really- ready. Good luck!!

Ah good luck man..I was the same way..I was torn between the Supra and the 7, but the money issue and the beauty of the 7 pretty much made it cut and dry.

Dayamz. I just found out how long it will take to rebuild my engine and tranny.

I was given an estimate of about two to three weeks in November. Looks like the story has changed. I'm now expected to get my engine back at the minimum of FOUR weeks, possibly five.

That means I probably won't have my car running for maybe 5 to 6 weeks. I'm depressed.

I guess that's what happens when you send your engine to one of the most reputable engine rebuilders in the NW. He's so dang busy, he can turn people away.

I think I'm gonna go buy a $500 dollar beater car....

A couple more?

Curbs are BAD things...evil things...curbs are like the bane of all rims and suspension.

Ya..I just tried to call you to tell you the "great" news...

I hope it's just a ballpark estimate, and they're just overexagerating so that I'm not expecting like 3 weeks or something.

Apparently, Rob is the only one doing the porting work now. I'll fill you in on the details when you get home or something.

By the way..my wife is going nuts over scrapbooking.
