engine porting and polishing

This being another one of my 5 hour learning sessions ... I stumbled across another thing that I need to have explained to me :\ ... I've been searchin all over but I can't really find anything GENERAL enough to make sense.

Engine porting and polishing: What the hell is it? (in brief)

While checking around for an answer I stumbled accross this:

http://www.mazdarx7engines.com/Pricing.html

If you scroll down you'll notice they "sell' street porting and polishing. How is this done? Like in what stage of the engine's life is this done? (I assume the beginning... ???)

I'm just really confused right now about what street porting and polshing even is, how it works, when its done, etc. If anyone could be kind enough to clue me in I'd really appreciate it. Until then, I'll keep searching.

Porting and polishing just refers to opening up and smoothing out the intake and exhaust ports. The larger the ports, the easier the engine can "breath" and hence more power.

The "stage" of the port that the website refers to is the size. Stage 2 is larger then stage 1, ect.

I'm not really sure what u mean by "what stage of life". I assume oyu mean when you do it. People do it when they are getting an engine rebuilt.

Can you do it at any time? Or only in the process of rebuilding an engine...

Engine needs to be out and dissassembled to do it, so yeah, most people do it while rebuilding the engine, since you need to rebuild it after you pull it apart anyways.
