engine block sitting for a year dormant

I'm looking at this S7 engine block which a local guy is selling dirt cheap, he has told me it has good compression but its been sitting in the bay of his car for a year without running.

What sort of problems might I encounter when trying to restart an engine thats been dormant for this long? I cant test it out as its just the block ( no manifolds etc) . Is there anyway I can check its condition without trying to start it up ? ( aprt from cracking it open )

The "poor man's" compression test will let you know if the engine has any compression:

Apex seals can stick over time. Use some MMO in the chambers to work each apex seal (through the exhaust port) before you stick all your components on it.
