Electrical Problems

First of all, it appears that there was an aftermarket security system installed before I bought the car. There are several cut wires that I have been tracing lately...

On the driver's side of the car there is a wire with a ring connector that connects to the body right bellow the a-pillar. The wire runs up behind the a-pillar and apparently to the map lights. When it is connected to the body, the map lights stay on constantly. It has been disconnected the entire time I have owned it. Is the wire supposed to be there? What is going on?

Secondly, what is this? I think that it is an ignition switch. Four wires run to the back of it with a fuse connected on one of them.

Also, I believe my starter has been wired to that switch. The yellow wire runs through the firewall and to the ignition assembly under the steering wheel.

Right now, the 7 is starting just fine. I suppose I should just leave things be, however the wire running to the map lights really bothers me.

If the map lights work normally and grounding that wire turns them on it would be safe to say it attached to the aftermarket alarm and the alarm would turn on the lights when the door locks are opened. The other wiring may have something to do with remote start ? ?

Section I2 of the Body Electrical Manual (available in the stickies) has disgnostic and wiring information for the map light.

Wiring going to and from CPU #2 is generally tapped in aftermarket alarm installations so it is possible that this wiring has been disturbed. Section J gives some details on this.

The item you pictured is probably a relay used by the aftermarket security system to activate the starter.

If the installers knew what they were doing, they would have tapped into the existing wire to the starter instead of running a new one. I cannot say for sure, but the gauge of that yellow wire does not look to be as big as the stock wire. I had intermittent starting problems on my car because alarm installers used too small of a wire for the starter line.

Thanks for the help guys. I did some more investigation and found that the relay has a wire from the starter wire in the ignition switch, 1 wire going to the starter, 1 wire going to my gear selector, and a cut wire which I suppse went to the alarm system to activate the relay.

As far as the map light goes I followed the ground wire to the unit and it is tapped into a black/white wire coming out of the light bulb socket.

Another interesting thing that I found is that on the bottom of CPU #2 it looks like there is a missing harness. Also, there is a plug with 3 connectors on it not connected to anything. This plug does not connect to the bottom of CPU #2 though. In the electrical manual it looks like the missing harness is only available on Canadian cars. Can anyone cofirm this?
