Question Electrical Help

My son has a 94. He was driving down the road and the tach started going crazy. He stopped at a light and smoke came from the front of the car, electrical smell. When he tried to turn off the engine it would not shut off. He popped the clutch to kill the engine. We spent the day looking for burned wires, can't find any. Even with the key off and removed from the ingnition when you hook the battery up it's like you have the key on. Put the car in reverse and it's like you turned the key off. Any ideas? Sounds like a relay somewhere.

Question

Unplugged the Blitz Timer, have checked all fuses. Currently reading shop manual. If you attache the battery cable the dash lights up like the key is on, without the key in the ignition. Put the car in reverse and all lights go out. car will start and run. I can pick off a burned smell form either the MSD Digital 6 box or the Digital DIS 2 box.

Have checked all fuses, none bad, Found a Shop manual which shows a starter cut relay. Will be checking this as soon as I get off work. This may tie in with the car turning off when you put it into gear with the key off. Thanks for responsding, feel kinda lost.
