EGT sensor - NPT or "clamp"?

I'm contemplating installing an EGT gauge on my FD. I just installed a Westach A/F meter gauge (analog) and I like it MUCH better than the blipping wonder (Autometer digital) I had previously. So I'm probably going to go with the Westach EGT gauge. Westach sells 2 types of sensors, ones which are bolt in (NPT) or ones which are clamped over a hole. Question that I have is: Is my SS downpipe "thick" enough to tap for a good non-exhaust-leak connection using the NPT sensor? Or should I go with the clamp on and use some high-temp gasket stuff on the "clamp"-on sensor?

Thanks!

Personally I would weld a small bung onto the pipe and use the NPT sensor.

No, your downpipe isn't thick enough to hold threads.

I would think about picking up an oxygen sensor plug ($10 or so, it's just a short bolt) and drilling & tapping it. That way it's easy to remove and you don't have to pull anything out to drill/weld.

Don't quite understand this. You state that the DP isn't thick enough to hold thread, yet you suggest getting an OS sensor plug (which I believe also has threads) and drilling and tapping it...

He's referring to welding a bung in the pipe which you can then have threaded and screw in an NPT sensor (not just threading the pipe itself).

Actually, I was referring to puling out the stock O2 Sensor (it's fairly close to the turbine exit and should be good enough for an EGT), getting a plug that fits in the existing O2 sensor bung and thread the plug to fit your EGT probe.

You shouldn't be using that bung for a wideband anyway (it's too hot there) and if you're at this point in the tuning game, I'm pretty sure you're not using the stock O2 sensor anymore.

Unfortunately I've still got my O2sensor there.

Are you using the stock computer? I only ask because if you're not then you most likely don't really want to use the stock O2 sensor anyway. If you are then why would you worry about your EGT when you can't use it to tune? The only thing it's really good for is for tuning, and to pile another gauge on the dash.

Yes I'm running the stock computer. My car's only performance mod is a SS DP. I actually want the gauge, because I've only got 2 gauges (Westach A/F ratio and Cyberdyne fuel pressure) in my Saab din panel and it just looks "off". Figure another gauge will balance everything out

Take it to an exhaust shop and have them weld a bung on the DP for the NPT sensor. It shouldn't cost more than a few bucks.
