ECU's available without breaking the bank?
I have a completely stock FD, and am about to add a Pettit DP (coated with TECHLINE) as my only performance mod. My buddy just bought a Porsche 911 and got an upgraded ECU off of ebay for like $50. Every ECU I see advertised in the classifieds, etc. are going for like $400-500. What gives? What HP increase do you think I'd see; i.e. is it worth it, and at what expense to reliability?'
Thanks.......you guys always have the best info!

you don't need an ecu with just a dp. you will flood your motor with a pettit or m2 reprogrammed one. With a reprogramable one however you can tune it for your mods but it is still not really needed yet. Wait for the cb and intake, then get an ecu. I recommend buying a reprogramable ecu that way as you continue to enhance your mods you will not have to get another ecu.
I went for the cheaper way out and got the pettit. Now that I am stepping up the mods I wish I had spent the extra $$ to get a pfc or haltech.

oh and as cheap as you can find them typically is 400-500 dollars for a pettit used. new pettit run about 700 and pfc is 1100 while haltech is 1300.
all of these allow you to bump up the psi there forgiving you more power. I have not had a reliability issue yet with mine

Performance upgrades on the Porsche are available in chip format. You can purchase just the reprogrammed ROM chips to stick in the ECU, hence the low price. For the FD, you'll need the whole ECU. I have not seen just the chips for them.
