Early interiors.... how bad are they?

Hi again guys

Sorry to pick your brains.

I've been reading a few articles about early 7s and their interiors, just how bad are pre 94s? I know the engine is the main concearn with these cars, I'm just trying to get an idea of everything to look out for.

Please <94 owners don't take this the wrong way, if its pure rubbish that I've read I'll happily hold my hand up and say I was wrong

Cheers

Dave

i've got a 93... had no problems with the interior... in tip top shape. Just keep it clean, and tighten and loose bolts you see over time...

The plastics in the '93 models were the problem. Specifically the plastics that surround the stereo/AC switches, and then the piece that surrounds the shifter and covers the tranny tunnel. They chip easily and the finishing comes off. Not very pretty. The '94 doesn't have the same finishing and is fine.

Ok thanks guys, I was more worried about major problems with the seats etc.

To be honest, when I find my 7 - I'll probably have the seats re-upholstered anyway, hopefully off to see another one over the weekend

It's not the "plastic" itself, it's the paint/clear coat over the plastic that chips.

You can easily repaint the parts:

I have a '93. Here's my take: as long as it's in good condition, I actually like the finish/feel of the 93 panels better than the textured 94-95 ones. The problem is that (as was previously mentioned), they chip and scratch really easily. I take really good care of my interior, but I got a couple of scratches anyway. With that said, the panels are REALLY easy to take off and repaint (with whatever color/texture/feel/finish that you want). I did that, and they came out looking great (almost like new again).

The other small problem with the 93's is the glovebox. They weren't desinged very well, and don't close easily. But that's really just a small annoyance more than anything else. The glovebox was redesigned for 94+.

WIth that said, I wouldn't base my decision on whether or not to avoid a '93 just based on the interior panels. 94-95s are a LOT harder to come by, so if you hold out for one, you may be waiting a long time. Instead you should just go looking for RX-7s and hold out until you find one in great condition (regardless of year). You'll probably be happier in the long run. Plus, like I said, small issues (like the interior panels) are easily fixed.

Thanks,

That one I posted above is a 92, so I'll still go and see it

Respraying doesn't look too bad either, have to love jap cars I guess, they stick together well but when you need to do some work on them they come apart easy too

Something to look out for in the 93 interior is the driver side door handle assembly. They have a tendency to break in numerous places and just generally be loose and squeaky and not really attached to the rest of the door. Mine is pretty bad - I've got to take the whole thing apart one of these days, figure out what's wrong, and replace it.

it all depends on the previous owner(s). mine has 120k on it and the interior is in pretty good shape. no cracks or chipping of any sort. carpet is a little hard from 10 years of use, but interior is actually in good shape overall.

I think the 93 finish is by far better looking than the lae model. The rough texture on post 93 looks like it belongs on bumper cars. It's to bad Mazda didn't try to improve the flat black surface.
Also 1992? Not sure about that.

My 93 was bought with 95k miles and the interior is still in excellent shape.

I can literally take my finger nail and poke my '92/'93 interior and it takes off some of the texture. And IMO, the '94+ interiors suck as well. Any one's best bet is to take whatever you can get and paint it black. I'm also sure that a '93 interior will be easier to paint than the rough surface of the '94+. Now do the handles really change over the years? Both of mine are screwed up, which I fixed, but still...

Ive never really had any problems with my 93 interior. Its been scratched here and there but they were from actual sharp objects. My passenger side door handle is solid as a rock too.
