Dying idle problems

Hi All

i have had this dying idle problem going on for a while now and i just can seem to get it right. basically i have turned the idle upto around 1200 rpms to stop it from stalling.

basically the problem is like this: each time i take my foot of the accelerator pedal and apply the clutch, the revs drop almost to zero and then climb back up to the present idle speed of 1200. if i set it to the recommended 850, it will die when i take my foot off the gas and apply the clutch. it idles pretty smooth whether at 850 or at 1200. there is a little bit of bucking at low speeds when you take your foot off the gas and allow the car to coast, but its not too serious.

i have searched and read the many threads on the subject and tried the many corrective methods too..but maybe im doing it all in the wrong order and not starting at the right point.

Can any of the guru's give some advice on where to start and what to do next.

thanks in advance.

GREG

I have a similiar problem which I haven't been able to solve. If you have a lightweight flywheel you should run a higher idle anyway but other then that I have never figured it out. I run 1,100 RPM and its almost OK but sometimes if im turning while stopping it still dies. If anyone knows the fix for this that would be great. I haven't bothered to ask my mechanic about it yet since I was hoping I could fix it with tuning but so far nothing.

I have the same problem when the engine hasnt warmed up yet. After everything is warmed up, its gravy though. Im not sure if this is abnormal or not. I think it might be. When I first got the car, I sometimes revved it to 2 - 3k to allow it to warm up a bit faster. These days, when I rev it and let go of the accelerator, it dies.

I do notice its more likely to happen before its fully warmed up as well but has happened when fully warmed too.

Someone else posted this same problem recently in which I replied. Check your diagnostics......... I had the same problem....car would stall and hesitate once warm. Dx came back with a bad water temp and O2 sensor. R&R. It runs incredible now. Just my experience.........

Water and temp sensors are fine on mine. I did replace the air temp sensor because it was acting up sometimes but nothing changed in regards to this specific problem. I don't think its related to the temp sensors at all (at least not in my case).

Actually my 93 idles fine at 750rpm with an ACT Prolite flywheel. As Zoolander said make sure you have no diagnostic issues, then do a proper idle set up per the FSM.

The problem isn't the idle, its the dropping the clutch and stopping at idle.

well you don't "drop' the clutch at idle, but I can pull away at 1000rpm comfortably.on level ground I can pull away at idle without touching the throttle pedal.

Stopping my idle drops to ~850 rpm then settles to 750rpm.

Believe me the FSM procedures for idle adjustment work.

thanks so far for all contributions..hopefully some more while chime in soon.

i bought a complete secondhand jap import motor and have swapped out most of the sensors without any real result, but i cant confirm whether the secondhand ones are any good either.

hope to spend some quaity time on this soon.

Try checking your clutch position switch. I had a similar issue which was fixed by replacing that switch.
