Dual radiators? anyone tried?

So i spoke to dave @ KDR a while back (also has it on his site) about how they tried a new set up, instead of SMIC, FMIC and VMount the pushed the IC all the way back to the engine (creating shorter piping) angled a long oil cooler in like a vmount orientation (i believe) and did dual rads in the normal oil cooler location...

from what daves told me the temps were always ambient and cooled down super fast.... currently i have a greddy fmic and koyo rad but im either gonna switch to a VMIC or this setup.... so as a summer project i want to fab one of these up.. this sounds very interesting, no one has done it, and daves a great mechanic so i believe his testimony... (only reason he hasnt marketed it was the custom mad rads from griffen were like a grand alone)

THUS i will be using lower end rads and seeing how well they perform..... So i just want to know what you guys think about this idea? im pretty sure i saw someone who tried this but with all the searching i cant find that link.......

thoughts?

Kind of neat, but it sounds like adding a LOT of complexity and potential failure points. Many people have made proven cooling setups that are much simpler and are dead reliable.

Are you having cooling problems with your current setup? I have an Apexi front mount and a CSF radiator, coolant temps always stay nice and low, 80's to '90s.

Yep, it's been done:

The downside is that you run into the same problems as Porsches; a minor hit to the front can dump all your coolant. Decent idea for track cars, but I'm not sure it's all that good for street cars.

Yup... seems like a long way to go for the net of shorter IC piping.

womp womp... maybe ill just stick with the traditional vmount then.... =/

and yes dale, temps are a little higher then i would like... there is a kink in one of my lines (looped the lines since the heater core broke) so i think that is my failure point...

Just going to put in my 2 cents here. I live in AZ where the summers are murder on rotaries. My car is setup with a Koyo radiator. Samco hoses (if it matters) stock fans and stock mount larger intercooler. single oil cooler. I can drive spirited in the summer just fine with the A/C on.

^^ You may want to consider changing that. Do you have an oil temp gauge? I'll bet if you hooked one up you'd be surprised by the temps.

yeah my mechanic recomended dual oil coolers as my next mod so i believe that would help dramatically...

just curious, what is the lowest temp you want the coolant to be? i heard its bad if the coolants temps are too low? true or false?

That is true, but thats why the oil coolers are fitted with a thermostat just like the cooling system.

oil that's too hot is worse than oil that's too cool

Its DEFINITELY on the list of things to change, also going to a larger intercooler with dedicated fan for traffic.
