drivebelt tension adjustment
when I took off the air pump I loosened the 2 bolts next to the alternator. I just put everything back on and I know how to adjust the tension, but the question is HOW TIGHT do I set the tension? I'm sure most of you took off the air pump before. Do I have to buy a gauge of some sort? or should I guesstimate the tension?

When I took my air pump off, and put it back on, I just man handled the belt back on and didn't adj. anything. Might not be the proper way to do it, but I havn't had a problem from doing it.

NAPA sells a tool called the "Cricket 2" (or something like that) for less than $20 that measures belt tension. You push on the belt and it will click to indicate the test is complete. Then you read how far a little plastic stick has moved using some gradations on the body of the tool to read the tension. The workshop manual has specs for the belt tension. It's a useful gadget if you are unsure of how tight to make them, but once you get a feel for how tight they should be you probably won't use it much.

I believe 1/2" deflection is the maximum you should go. For the air pump belt, I believe you should check deflection in the middle section on the far right side of the belt. It's the vertical section going from the alternator to the engine pulley.
