drill the nipples?

my car has newer turbos on it they dont have the restrictor pills in the lines...i was told that to do the manual boost control mod you would have to first drill out the nipples? is this true or can i still do the mod without drilling the nips.

The nipples are acting like pills do, they restrict the amount of pressure that goes threw the lines. Therefore you are limited to the maximum pressure those nipples will allow. On the wastegate line, more pressure through the hose means less boost. So if you need to lower your boost, then you would probably need to drill out the nipple. On the Precontrol line, more pressure means less primary boost and more boost spike at the transition (if you are still sequential). So if you want less primary boost vs. secondary boost and more spike then you will need to drill out the nipples (you might not need to do this one).

Find out if you can buy the nipple off of the earlyer turbos from the dealer or someone else. Or, the threads on the fitting should be something comonly available, you might be able put another fitting on there if you dont want to drill yours out.

People generally drill them out and then either use pills or needle valves to control the boost from there. Be sure that you really have the newer style turbos though. I had mine replaced with brand new turbos in Sept of 00 and they were still the older style with pills. I think it just depends on where the turbos were bought.

That elbow is pressed in to the compressor housing, so it is possible to remove it, drill the nipples, then replace it. I don't know how easy it would be. I drilled the nipples out when I had the turbos off the car and just plugged up the compressor outlet with a paper towel and cleaned all the shavings before removing the paper towel.

I got this quote from steve ciriani's site
http://scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/turbos.html#BOO

From: "Jones, Trey" Trey.Jones@COMPAQ.com
Well I don't know how to paste the whole thing. but if you go to steve's site under boost contol this guy Trey Jones talks about controlling boost by restricting the flow coming to the solenoid from the actuator. If you do it his way you won't need to drill your nipples. I'm not sure if it will work, but Trey Jones says it does

i jsut recently did this on my car a few weeks back, i took of the pre control line also and hooked up a shop vac to it so i could suck the shavings away from the turbo as drilled, thats about it, i just used a drill bit barley bigger, like i got the bit that would fit it perfect then got the next size up, i believe a 5/64. but not sure, i will check when i get home, drilled out the nipple and had a nice 12 puonds of boost, if you have any questions shoot me an email, hope this helps, scott
