Drag racing temps?

At the track today... Ran 12.25 @ 112 mph.

However... I looked down at the temp gauge after shifting to 3rd/4th gear at WOT on a run and noticed the needle was near the red area...
but when returning on the return road and then idleing to cool down it returned to the middle mark where it usually sits. And idled fine with normal vaccum.

Is this normal?

I'm also running Evan's coolant... no pressure.

I do not want to list the mods... it will be depressing to list all my mods... All I know is that I should be getting 116 - 117 thru the traps but am short by and 50 hp.

Drag racing doesn't really require the best cooling system, 12 sec of WOT isn't much compared to a track day.

The stock guage does suck, and like fastFD mentioned, your car was REALLY HOT if you saw the stock guage in the red. The stock guage doesn't really move much until the coolant reaches 230-240F. If it was in the red I'd guess that your coolant was higher that 240F, not ideal considering that you weren't at WOT for more than 13 sec.

Anyway I don't know much about Evan's coolant but I think you should try to run some pressure in the system so you don't pull a vacuum on the back side of the water pump.

What did you do with your thermostat when installing the Evans? Also with the Evan's they now recommend using a 7psi pressure cap so your system gets some pressure... I think there was a couple of people who said the coolant wasn't flowing at 0 psi.

I do not do anything to the Thermostat.
I will change to a lower pressure cap...
Where can you find one for the Pettit AST?

The Pettit AST is the only spot where one will fit and they sell it at any auto parts store. Looks just like the one that is on the AST but will say 7psi insted of 13psi. That might help but if your Thermostat is getting up there in miles that might cause it also.

the stock cooling system components are just fine, provided everything is clean and maintained (no gunk in radiator, new thermostat, etc).
