Doing hose job: Filter things on ends of solenoids

Hey, I'm in the middle of doing my vac hose job right now and I'm just changing the hoses on my solenoid rack as we speak.

According to this picture, there should be 2 of these little filter things on the ends of the solenoids. What are these and what do they do? Mine seemed to have broken off somehow. My car has never had a rebuilt, so it seems odd that they're missing. Do I need to get these? Are they really necessary?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, here's a picture.

Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

If yours is broken, just cap those tips off. You'll be fine.

I assume you are talking about the air filters attached to the "front" of the Pressure Regulator and Switching Solenoids. I am guessing that yours have either been removed or broken off. Several other solenoids have similar air filters on the back.

RTFM if you want to know the purpose of the solenoids.

The purpose of these air filters is just what you would expect: To prevent dirty air from entering the system. Leave them off and there is a chance dirt may get sucked in cause the solenoid to stick or leak.

Cap the ends where the air filter goes and you might as well remove the solenoids and run a bypass hose.
