Does anyone make a Titanium Downpipe?
I am looking to get a full Titanium exhaust, and I was just wondering if anyone makes a Ti downpipe. The exhaust is Ti all the way to the DP. If not, I will just go with stainless DP. Thanks for the help.
Other than just to claim you have a full TI exhaust, any particular reason you want a TI downpipe? The SS ones weigh less than 10 lbs anyway and are likely to be much cheaper than a TI d/p would be (if one is available).

In all honesty, I just wanted one. I have a thing for Titanium, I like the way it looks better than SS. Its no big deal and I don't mind getting a SS downpipe. Just thought I would ask some people to see if they even made a Ti downpipe. Thanks

I asked about that about a year ago. No one makes it. Although I do know someone that can custom make stuff in Titanium but at $100/hr just for labor a custom DP isn't worth it. It candle handle as much heat as SS and is very brittle, so you would heat coat it anyhow and loose the look. Unless you need to shave weight for racing, there's no reason for it.

No, you don't have to heat coat the exhaust. The exhaust will cool the further it exits. I don't know the temps or diff's but I was told it couldn't handle the temps from the exhast manifold. I also inquired about inconel but it's extremely heavy and expensive. There is no reason to get a titanium exaust either unless again you need to shave weight for racing or you like the bling factor.

If you want a better answer then mine or you still think you want one, contact RotaryExtreme and see if they would even quote you on fabricating one.
A titanium downpipe is going to "ring" too. Most titanium piping is thinwalled, and transmits sound very readily. I drove in a buddys RSX with a titamium header and exhaust and it sounded like a schoolbell! No really, it was very loud, even incar.. not a pleasant loud either, a tinny, .. well ringing is the only way I know to describe it
You won't need to heat coat it, but I'm inclined to agree, unless you are trying to shave every last pound for racing and/or want that super-BLING factor in the spec sheet, Stainless will be more than enough and the money you save you can buy other toys.

The down pipe on our cars starts with a VERY sharp bend that would be difficult to acheive by bending titanium. Thats why you see alot of Ti pieces that look like several spliced lengths of tube, rather than a smooth bend.
I'm not sure you'd see any performance benefit from a custom fab'ed part, and you would likely jet-hot coat it anyway....

I thought inconel was light? Because they didn't have to use as much and made it very thin like they do with titanium parts
and yes thats why titanium exhaust is for the most part tinny is because it is very thin because of its strength.

Alright thanks, I really don't want a loud exhaust so I will keep that in mind. What is a really good SS exhaust that I could get? And I was orignally going to go with no cats.....yep, I wanted to polute the world! :o) Will I notice much performance difference going with a hiflo cat as opposed to no cats? Thanks

erm, for second gens the Racing Beat is about the best power/noise ratio. Sounds great, not too loud at all even with open exhaust (no cats on a turbo this is).
I would think the FD exhaust would be similar, I hear that Greddy makes good sounding exhausts also, and look into JIC.

The heat a NA piston engine creates does not compare to the heat of a turbo rotary- You are talking 400* F difference here on well tunned cars.
The F1 used Ti because the engine has much lower exhuast temps than Turbo Rotary-

IIRC a piston engine will have ~1400F (I've measured) exhaust temps while a na rotary can reach 1700F (I've heard). Figure it'll drop at least a couple hundred degrees through the turbos.
Nice thread necro. There's some good info about materials in this thread.
