The stock 'Y' is also metal. What distinguishes the Efini from the stock unit is that the crossover pipe that connects to the IC coupler on the efini is also metal and I believe the 'Y' section is shaped differently.

Stock Y-Pipe: Plastic Cross-over Tube w/ Rubber Coupler that connects to Y-Pipe with two hose clamps.

Jspec 99 Y-Pipe: Aluminum Cross-over tube w/ metal gasket that connects to Y-Pipe with two nuts (12mm?).

I have one, and it is a very good mod. I think Mazda added it to the FD as stock equipment around 96 or 97. They claimed an additional 10 HP with the addition of the efini y-pipe, and no other changes. The Y section has much better flow characteristics. In addition, the rubber coupler to crossover tube is eliminated. It is replaced by bolting the two new sections directly together. This eliminates the failing of the rubber coupler. It also eliminates the flexing of the crossover pipe under acceleration.

I have one too. I honestly don't think it actually makes a 10 HP difference by itself though. If you already have some mods and add one you *might* get 10 HP from it, but adding one to a stock engine - probably not. It is much better than the stock unit because it eliminates the troublesome connector between the y-pipe and the crossover tube (a very common failure). Plus it looks a lot better if you polish it.

also the bung thats inserted in the y pipe for the air bypass valve is placed out of the stream of air flow, so better boost response.

One of the best upgrades I've ever done.

1) Increased performance (larger opening than our stock lower y-pipe)
2) Eliminated a weak spot in the system (no rubber coupling to worry about)
3) Looks purty (once polished or coated)

Found mine on ebay and it was extremely polished. I am gonna have to re-do the rest of the polished items in the engine bay.
