Disconnecting Compressor Bypass Valves
Does anyone know if, since there is no mass air sensor in 3rd gens, it is safe to disconnect the blowoff valves from the airbox? It seems to me that letting the system vent to atmosphere will not make the car run rich or otherwise create inaccurate air intake volume measurements.
I want to know if they are functioning, but the airbox totally muffles the sound.

No Problem
Doesn't make any diff where it vents. Check out all the guys with aftermarket BOV's.
You can't even hear the Charge Relief Valve venting during accel.
The noise from your BOV will be more noticable.
The benifit is that hot/compressed air is not vented back into the airbox.
Just make sure you point the discharge air from the BOV somewhere that it wont damage/melt anything over time. It's surprizing how hot the air venting really is.

That is why I did it.
Put a crankcase K&N filter on the end or else you will have black **** everywhere. I stuffed mine inbetween the airbox and fenderwell. Be sure to plug up the hole in the airbox or else hot air will come in.
