Disconnect airpump = car faster??

I disconnected my airpump today just to see how everything would run. obvisouly the moo went away.....oh, sweet silence. i didnt know the car could be so quiet!

idled lumpy, so i set idle 50 more rpms through the commander and its fine now.

went for a drive. car was faster and i mean, faster. went to an empty parking lot with some nice speed bumps that you can go around, instead of over and basically went autocrossing for a few minutes. never got above 3500rpm.

so i stopped and plugged the airpump back in, and tried it again. noticeably slower. .................unplugged it, noticeably faster

i was under the impression it had little to no bearing on performance, but i can assure you, in my situation it does? but i dont really understand why? i would even be so bold as to say it feels like, maybe, another 10HP

Congrates you now know what 2hp feels like. Now go do some real performance mods.

Since the airpump does not function above about 3000rpm,you tested under the wrong conditions!Try again and keep your rpm above 4000all the time.

^ thats kinda my whole point. the car feels faster in the rpm range where the airpump would have been functioning. im sure above that, nothing changed.

2HP?.........hmm..........nope. dont think so. i doubt i would even be able to feel a difference in 2 HP. im not trying to exagerate. the car is quicker with it unpluged. Im just reporting my findings.

Maybe you could get one of those Fast and the Furious buttons on your steering wheel...

Only instead of Nawz - it turns off the air pump!

Damn, this thread sure attracted some real ********* on this forum. Sorry man. If you have the opportunity, get to a dyno and see what the difference really is. It may not be more max HP but more at different RPM's than your regular setup. I'm sure alot of us would be curious. Congrats on the free HP though.

When people are talking about performance, they are usually talking 1/4 mile or 0-60 time type performance. In these conditions, usually the car is above the rpm limit where the air pump actually functions, thus it bears little or no impact on the performance based on those test criteria.

The test you performed, autocross where RPM's are low and in the range of the air pump will definitely be affected, and actually exaggerated due to the fact that you are in a lower power range. The pump will actually consume a reasonable amount of power if kept in that range.

I would suspect that most, if not almost all people describing performance are speaking of the first two situations, not your test situation.

Think of it this way, I can say the performance of the 3rd gen cars sucks horribly compared to every Hyundia made. The statement is completely true if the performance I am talking about is gas mileage performance, but is completely false if the test condition is 0-60 time performance.

If I made this statement to you without quantifying which performance standard I was thinking, what would your assumptions be??

Tim

ok. well, that makes sense. i had just always read the blanket statement about no performance gains. but i can see how most people may not notice an improvement at such low rpms, with quarter mile times being the main concern and doing things like goin non-seq. im stock seq, and LOVE the low end grunt.

well, this is the best thing ive done to the car in a while! lol. a LOT quieter, and gained some umph down low, for free. now if garfinkle would just get his new pulley ready......

Interesting idea. I Autocross my FD for fun and am not at all competitive. Two reasons for that: 1) I can't drive, and 2) not enough acceleration in 2nd gear in the low RPM range.

I wonder if disabling the air pump for autocross would improve that at all? I have to keep the air pump for emissions but wouldn't mind disabling it for the length of time of an autoX event.

Stupid question, but what did you unplug, just the electrical connector to the airpump?

yes.

and about removing it. yes, you can just use a new shorter belt, but according to some on this site, your water pump pulley will slip at idle. making that route a danger/nuisance for a street car.

im waiting for garfinkles pulley.

Not at all true if done right.. I agree Garfinkle's would be a better choice. I live an hour from you and have modded my car for 10 years.. If you think about taking it to a different level on stock turbos let me know. I'll show you what it is really capable of.

^ like i said. according to some on this site. i personally have no experience with it, im just reiterating what ive read.

im not sure what you mean about taking it to the next level, but it sounds like i would be interested! are you coming to the jacksonville meet?

oh, and to whoever told me to turn off o2 on my commander, thank you! i drove the car again last night with the airpump still unplugged, my idle adjusted well, and o2 turned off. its a pleasure to dirve now. rev shifts are smoother, everything appears to just run a little better.
