Can anybody explain/point me to a link that details the reason for different redlines between the automatic & manuals.. as in are there tuning differences among the engines or something? It seems all automatics redline @ 7k while manuals are 7.5 & 8k, years pending.

after 2 years and you are back in the game !

You will be glad to know you are not the only handi in our FD community.:egrin:..I have been a Para for over 7 years. I drive the shit out of my auto FD. Currently going single turbo. The redline without an engine management system is 7k but with the power fc mine is over 8k i think.....so it does'nt even matter if your looking to modify the car, but if you have any questions let me know........Jason

Yep, it's hard to get rid of me, plus ditching the girlfriend (2y ago) has proved to be financially.. uplifting!

Hotwheelz - you got PM. :)

masonholmes 03-26-11 03:06 PM

I think I may be about locked in on a '94. :fingersx:

masonholmes 04-13-11 11:24 PM

Well the '94 had too many issues to start off with, (for a gimp), but I put a down-payment on what's allegedly a really clean & rx7.com modified/serviced '93, today. He's supposed to hold it while I gather the $$$ for shipping. Wish me luck!

They've always done this, even the RX8's are like this. It's not the engine, but the transmission can't handle the high revs. It's something about the fluid pressure because unlike a manual transmission where the gears are just sitting in an oil bath, in an automatic transmission the fluid is actually being pumped internally. I'm not an automatic transmission expert, but there certainly are people who can modify automatic transmissions to make them a lot stronger and better. So it's still possible to get high performance.

In Japan it's popular to buy used high performance cars with automatic transmissions because the myth is that people don't drive them as hard so they are always in better condition. Then they swap them out for a manual transmission. So you might just benefit from this surplus of automatic transmissions.

Hmm.. well, Hotwheelz "DD's the shit out of his" with 309whp and an 8k+ shift, thx to the piggyback setup for the PowerFC, so hopefully mine will fare as well! (tho I do hope to have L10 modify the valvebody & do some other goodies eventually) Also, I've already found a tranny with 20k since rebuild & verified as being in perfect working order for CHEAP, including shipping! (thx to djseven) I just have to squeak by until I've got the aforementioned FD delivered & I can catch back up on finances enough to get it in my hands, haha. Miata ATX's are relatively cheap for the same reason. (my spare for the M's currently sitting in the back of the MX-3. unfortunately the MX-3's tranny's shown early signs of death though :p:)

Mason,

I just came across this automatic FD down here today:
http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/cto/2396541099.html 500 miles on the rebuild and looks to be in excellent condition.

Hey thanks man, I actually got tipped off to that one already, (also found here in the F/S section), but thanks! If all things go well I should be having the black '93 mentioned a couple posts ago, delivered this month. The member who re-did that MB seems to really know his stuff though so it's still a possible backup! (said he put it together for his GF but she got scared when she got a ticket )

Excellent. Good luck and keep us posted.

Will do. It was rebuilt by rx7.com 12k ago, yearly maintenance & all mods from/done by them, new tranny, powerFC + commander, modified torque converter, 3" from turbo's back etc etc etc.

If Chris and Ari worked on the car, then you're in good shape :icon_tup:

That's what everybody's told me/why I locked in on this one ASAP. Also.. I just secured the rest of the $$$ needed for both the car & shipping - just gotta get'r on a truck now! :D

rxse7en 06-07-11 07:58 AM

Mason, any updates?

masonholmes 06-07-11 11:15 AM

Ahh, been waiting for somebodies check to physically hit my account. It's allegedly there this time/I'm headed back to try & wire the remaining owed shortly. Soo close, haha.

masonholmes 06-08-11 08:47 PM

Alright.. he's got my riches & I've got a shipper in-line that can hopefully get'r here sometime next week. I posed this question elsewhere but figured I would here too. Not sure if I should have the owner mail me the title or just let it come with the car, on the truck? The only other long-distance purchase I've made involved a dealer. (though I don't suppose that makes a difference) Once she arrives, I'll still have some downtime while me & my buddy hopefully adapt/install my spare set of hand controls - BUT I'M EXCITED!!!!! :D
:beerchug:

96fd3s 06-08-11 09:45 PM

congrats on the purchase! will need pics once you get it!

masonholmes 06-08-11 09:49 PM

Oopsy, just realized I asked the title question twice in the same section - sorry bout that! :o: (I started this thread soo long ago, for some reason I thought it was somewhere else, lol)

masonholmes 06-10-11 02:23 PM

All Day Auto said they could be there possibly as early as today or tomorrow to pick it up, and have my deposit!

rxse7en 06-11-11 08:50 AM

Waiting... :)

Mason, do you use a custom, mechanical set-up for gas and brake? Is there a fly-by-wire option, something like F1 paddles or a custom wheel with triggers?

Mason, do you use a custom, mechanical set-up for gas and brake? ...

I'd pay if an electronics guru were to come up with a fly-by-wire setup, putting throttle/brake paddles behind the wheel somehow. Unfortunately I've just got a pretty basic mechanical setup that doesn't allow my putting both hands on the wheel unless CC's on. They DO make something as described, but the pricing's insane & last checked, could only be installed on a select few vehicles. (read: boring, like Ford Econolines & shit) I recently contacted a company who advertises they can make virtually anything drivable for anybody, as I knew they'd have the components & know-how for the task. Unfortunately, they first have to deem the candidate worthy of a specialized design by way of medical necessity, which again leaves me SOL, since I don't need anything custom. :icon_tdow Regardless, eventually I'll have a transmission specialist install an up/downshift toggle of sorts & all the goodies that come with that. Hopefully I can make the above a reality @ some point as well! About my current controls, I believe Hotwheelz (in this thread) may have a picture of his/basically the same exact thing, in his album on here.

masonholmes 06-20-11 01:17 AM

I know, I'm getting annoying @ this point.. but I should be picking her up in the morning! :D Still gotta wait for buddy to help me get the controls in, but hopefully that'll be in the next day or two. (or I may have to fly retarded on his ass :tonque:)

Hotwheelz 06-20-11 06:17 AM

wow, today? You must take pictures before anything else
