dirty filter and box, High flow filter and piping instead okay?

I have a really dirty airfilter and box. Its oily, and has kind of a sludgy oil/dirt texture to it. Nasty stuff. Just wondering if this is normal for a filter that hasn't been changed for a while. I just don't see how that can be healthy for the motor. The top of the filter seems fine, but the bottom sections of the box and filter are gross. Its definitely due for replacement and cleaning. Is it okay to do some sort of hardpipe w/highflow filter kit that keeps the stock locations as a replacement? MUCH MORE importantly, will it be okay to run this on stock fuel management? I am planning on a dp pretty soon once some cash comes together, and was wondering if this would be okay to run without some sort of management. Would a K&N drop in make it flow too much and run lean? Not that I want to tempt how far the car can go in a lean condition, its just that this filter needs replacing, and I need to know if a high flow system, i.e. K&N filter in stock box or hardpipe kit with filters for each turbo would be okay with completely stock configurations, with a DP on its way eventually.

I think it should be ok. I've heard you can run usually at most 3 mods on stock ecu. Of course basic mods, so I think the intake would be ok. Just check everything and make sure your running smoothly, I'm putting a dp on mine too on stock ecu. It's ok, just don't get too crazy with mods before upgrading ecu and fuel.

Putting on some hard pipes will increase your flow, and allow warmer engine air into your intake(bad). Keep the stock box and modify it.

If you are going to put on a down pipe & intake, I suggest you put on a boost controller. These upgrades will increase your boost. You shouldn't run more than 10 psi boost without upgrading your ECU.\

yeah...NO high boost without ecu upgrade, should have upgraded IC too. But either way, cold air intake or moded stock airbox is good either way. But to deal with the cold air hard pipe intake system bringing in hot air, try fabricating a type of heat shield to go between the intake and engine. I have seen this done before and heard of it's great success in keeping intake temps down to a low. Good idea if you are creative and have the time and moeny to do this. Otherwise stick with moding your stock airbox. =)
