Dimmer circuit guage light

Am I crazy or does the dimmer circuit loose voltage as the instrument lights get brighter? I'm trying to connect a Defi control box to the ash tray light, but the guage is lighting opposite to the dash. Does anyone know of a good easy to get to wire to connect to?

Did you wire the guage light to the power and ground of the ash tray light? Do you have them wired backwards?

Sounds like you are on the wrong side of the dimmer....

Cheers,

The ashtray acts as though there are two positives. When lights are on, one wire is constant 12v, the other wire varies with the dimmer. Here's the kicker, when the lights are dimmed, the second wire increases in voltage. When lights are on full brightness, the reading on the multimeter is 0v. I have four wire coming out of the control unit, red (constant power), orange (ignition power), black (chassis ground), and white (guage lighting).
