Different RX-7 Models???
hey, i finally decided to make myself an account on this board although I have been reading on it for a bit.
I decided to buy myself an third gen rx-7 after many years of drooling!!! I have about 6-7 months until I do because winter is here in canada (already) and these rear-wheel drive machines don't like canadian winter roads too much!
I have been doing a bit of research and decided to look for a Touring model (preferably Montegio blue) because of the extra luxury items. I made the mistake on my last car not to do so and I regretted it afterwards (the extra 70lbs won't slow me down!). I was just curious what does plastic tubes in the trunk for the bose system did?
Also I heard in a couple places about the "efini" model... what is it? is it just the R1 with a different name? or is it a really rare car that none one seems to know info about???
Thanks for all the help. Can't wait for the snow to go away!!!

I dont mean to be a ***** to you, but if you researched you would know the differences. This topic was asked about 2 weeks ago too. Its been asked a lot. Search next time bro before asking it'll show the rotorheads you're on top of things.
Anyways, I know I'm a little off on this info but the tubes in the touring are to help send the sound waves through out the car. Um, and efini I believe is just in japan, don't know much on it though.
Laters.

yea, the tubes in the trunk is part of the bose sound system, extra bass and such. sounds pretty good actually, well at least for a 10 year old car. i don't exactly remember but i think from my rx-7 book efini is the name they used in japan and australia to market the rx-7. it started as like afini then infini and finally efini.

for example: does the third gens really do 0-60 in 5.2s? and what's the actual top speed of them? not what mazda tells you but what have you guys max-out your stock rx-7 at?
thanks for the advice though... sorry if i pissed off anyone with the repeating question thread.

Also went throught this pain a long while back when purchasing my RX-7.
Its all in the packaging since the car is 10 years old now (at least for most models worth purchasing at human prices) some items made the car more of a collecters item, a little more distinction.
Overall the R1 to the standard models is weight, and handeling. Not to mention that they didn't really import too many of them. You will pay an extra buck for these but, as I found out, wasn't really worth it unless your a collector. Anyhow, I always loved the Bose Stereo (mine still has a complete stock system) in these freaky little machines that you can't get in a real R1.
Look wise, the wing is cool, personally I like as clean a look as possible (no wing) better but that is what you are going for.
Overall for your RX-7 purchase you will probably replace all the R1 components with new technology eventually(springs, swaybars, stereo) after you buy it anyhow so you are mostly just getting the wing and the racing model.
If you got the cash, pretty cool little collectors item but if you are looken to make a beast, better keep as much reserve for repairs and parts as you can, unless you come across a better then life deal.
Just remeber that when you go to buy, there is no great deals on this category of car. Be very skepetical of everything. If someone is offering a deal, then there is at least one major problem with the car, find it. Personally I got screwed, a small oil leak and hesitation turned into an engine replacement for worn Apex Seals causing low manifold pressure. Hit the web site in the newby thread at the top and study it. Wish I had seen it before I went out to buy mine.
Later and good luck!!

as for the efini model. it is Japans higher model i believe. it is like the RZ or the spirit R
0-60 MPH takes about 5 seconds. Top speed is about 160 MPH.
I suggest buying the cleanest / best condition car you can find and afford. It would be great if you can find just the car you want, but I think you will be happiest in the long run if you buy the one that is in the best condition.
A few issues to consider when choosing a model:
- If you are tall and want to participate in motorsports events that require a helmet, the sunroof can be a problem as it reduces headroom.
- The leather seats seem to show more wear than the cloth base seats or the suede-like cloth of the R models.
- The R-model had different shocks and a front a shock tower bar, but all the other suspension items are the same across all models from a given year. And the stock shocks are probably quite old at this point anyway. The tires were also different, but those have surely been replaced or need replacement at this point.
- Some people like the Bose system, but some don't, and it is easier to install an aftermarket stereo and speakers in the non-Bose models. The CD players go bad on these cars after a while, and getting a new head unit seems to be the most cost effective remedy.
Go out and test drive the cars available in your area, and then re-assess your priorities based on what is available. I found a good price on a car in decent condition that was not really the exact car I was shopping for, but it turned out to be a good buying choice in the long run.

thanks for all the help guys
another quick question: is the only different between the touring and the base the Bose system, leather and sunroof? (what about ABS, AC, etc...)
and was the sunroof an option for the base models?
