Were exactly are you located? Is this the red rx7 that i saw in Des Moines on I235? I go back in forth between DM and CR so i can help come warmer weather.
Also, is it possible for it to be a bad cat converter? Clog cat suffacates motor, unburt fuel dumps into exhaust, fuel ignites causing backfiring and excessive flames. Sounds good in my head...lol

Pull the cat and replace it with a downpipe. I was nervous about it but then it was surprisingly easy. Many advantages and your going to do it eventually no matter what, so order one. My ignorant vote is for something other than motor. My old 89 did that once and it was just a loose hose on the intercooler, bypassing the air flow meter, (these cars use a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor instead, but you get the point).

I know its frustrating, but this is just the beginning if you plan on keeping the car for a while.

We want to know, so make it happen!
If the exhaust has been changed, its likely other things were also done. It would be very good to find out, just in case you have modifications that require another modification to protect the engine. A $10 manual boost controller, for example, would also require a new computer and injectors, etc.... Some here also suggest a piggyback computer with just a free flow exhaust and intake, because the stock computer runs too lean (not enough fuel). You probably don't have one. Can you contact the previous owner?

It does seem like it has been running too lean or too rich ever since i got it... never right... It always has smoke coming out of the exaust... cant tell if it is blue or white... seems like a little of both. After it started having major problems there were times were there was a little black smoke as well. but more blue or white.
after the engine started having problems it lets out a lot more exaust. A LOT MORE. I had it in a freinds garage when we got home and started it to get it to my house. let it run for only about 2-3 minutes and by that time the exaust was so bad that it was filling the whole house. when we opened the door to the garage ( attached 2 stall) there was nothing but exaust....
That mean anything or normal when having these types of engine problems?
The only thing that is keeping me going is the fact of seeing complete rx7's...
I think even if i do a compression test and it only needs a few parts i may just save up for a complete over haul.... cheaper in the long run
first thing.... drivers side door handel.... mine broke because of the cold...

My car wont stop either?
Hey my car did the same exact thing this fall ran fine but was untuned and then lack of power then wouldn't idle then backfired a bunch and wont start at all now! I have an 86 Fc with a re-ammemya body kit a 13btt-re motor from japan and a microtech ems. i did a compression test today and it said both rotors were about 90 psi? is this good or no cuz i am sick of it not starting!
