You don't sound like you're in a desperate situation to get rid of your FD. You don't sound broke and you have alternate modes of transportation (your TBird and your Explorer). Generally you invest for a long term. So, if your idea of investing is taking $8k and expecting a nest egg when you graduate college... that's false hope and you're gravely mistaken. Technically, you may even lose money. Only invest for long term (read: at least 5 years, preferably more)... with a goal. I.E. retirement, house, etc ad nauseum.

So... basically. Ask yourself if you would do the whole FD thing again... would you buy another one, mod it like you have, and get car-itis/sports car fever again?? If the answer is YES, don't sell your FD because you're back in the same boat. If the answer is NO, sure, sell it to somebody that will give you what you want for it and appreciate the FD gem that it is. Then take the money and invest it with a GOAL for a LONG term... mutual funds would be my advice. Hope this helps.

why dont you run some copper seal in it to temporarily patch the coolant seal so you could drive it everyone once in a blue moon when you really feel like you need to. I drove aorund mine for 3 months with a blown coolant seal. Since you said you already have 2 other cars, GARAGE the FD. Since u cant drive 3 cars at once anyways, sell those 2. and buy something that would hold you over for the time being. Nothing too expensive, reliable, and gets good gas mileage. Or just sell one of them and take that money to invest or put into the FD or whatever and drive only one car. Who needs 3 cars!

Then take that money for the "second FD" and invest that. Why go out and buy another one when you might end up with even more problems then the coolant seal you already have now.

When my FD was down for a rebuild, i bought an FC for 1,000 bux and rocked that til my FD was ready.

 

for what you'd spend on a bone-stock fd, you could probably have a 400whp beat-down fc

and copper sealer suxors...use ceramic sealer if you go that route.

If I plan on rebuilding it, I don't want to potentially clog up my heater core/radiator with any block sealer, unless you think it might be okay to do that? I have never seen the ceramic stuff in a store, only the copper stuff. Is there a specific brand? (CRC is the copper stuff I usually see)

crc is absolute garbage!!!

irontite makes the ceramic sealer ~#11 a bottle and well worth it...it actually WORKS!

man what a hard decision.

i will tell you what an older programmer at my company let me in on via his own experiences. i guess the background would be that he's a video game programmer and that in the late 80s and the 90s times were very good to them.

he's owned several italian cars and when i started with the company, an FD, which he sold about a year after i joined the company. at the age of 40 he wished that he had not played so much and invested the money he made. all he had to show for ithe vehicles were memories and that doesnt take his kids through college. he said looking back he wished he had saved the cash and retired early.

so theres another way to look at it.

 

Yeah... it'll all about moderation and balance. You don't want to do what's best for the future but you also don't want not enjoy your life. And starting investing early is VERY helpful if you invest for the longterm.

I am often tempted to buy new fancy cars. I probably spend more than I should on my FD and racing it. But I really love doing it and I am fortunate enough to be able to play with my cars and still save money. However, I would not suggest owning any car that strains your budget. Sure, cars are great. But not worth messing up your finances for life.

We'll see if I continue to follow my own advice...

 

I'm still baffled that your car overheated while it was off. Have you ever heard of anyone else having that problem? I haven't.... Bummed to hear that you're thinking of selling it. You ought to call Rotary Power and ask them what may have happened. Good luck.

 

i shut my car off @ 197 degrees today and got a coffee.. ~3 minutes later it was @ 206, according to the haltech anyway. i wasn't paying attention and had the ignition on, but engine wasn't running while i was playing with some timing guesstimations for cruise.

~2 minutes later, i started the car and temps dropped roughly 20 degrees within a minute. i'd never bolthered to measure that before and discovered it more or less by accident today, but i guess it just heat soaks when you shut off a hot engine (well, more than i thought anyway).

 

yeah... I don't understand coolant seals. They die on some folks for no reason at all. Then there are people like me who have overheated their engine several times and have pushed it up to 240F regularly at the track for years and have had no problems.

 

the real question you have to ask yourself is:

did it overheat because the coolant seals blew, or did the coolant seals blow because it overheated?

 

It could have possibly been dying for a while already. My car once lost all the coolant from a busted radiator endtank which was caused by flying tire on the I405-S.

Though, I didnt have any coolant problems until now.

 

My FC with a RE overheated this summer, highest i saw was 254*F with the car running

that was maby 4 months ago, i still drive it daily, pull's same vac etc

 

Why not get a low mileage Clean JSpec and install it?? I have a few very nice and low mileage motors I can sell. Seems like it would be quicker plus sell of all your old motor internals and get some of your money back.. Down the road you go... And if you still want to cash out, sell it after its running good again and get top dollar for it..

That's what would happen with my car. The temp might look okay before turning it off, but after shutting down it would raise to overheat levels and spit coolant like a virgin giving head.

guitarjunkie rebuilt my engine and found i had a busted coolant land.

 

More and more, I am starting to lean towards a minor rebuild. I was told by Rotary Power that they may just rebuild my o-rings. Though, the rebuild will still be in the ballpark of $3k.

 

Err, that last post was a bit confusing, after reading it over. They said they would make sure all the wear/tear parts are within spec, and then just replace the o-rings.
