Custom paint colors? What to do?

im in the process of painting my RX7 but i dont know what color to go with. I dont want a stock color but rather something nice and unique. I really like AARotary's redish color but I havent been able to find out who makes it and what color it is. Anyone know? What colors would you guys go with? Money isnt much of an issue here. $3500 or less. Thanks a lot.

Make that "Absolute Blasberry Prizm". Mine is "Absolute Purpleen Prizm".

Keep in mind that the DuPont Chromalusion "colors" don't cover well (multiple coats required, usually between 5-7) and are very expensive. $253/pint is the best price I found, vs. ~$200 for a gallon of any "normal" red-based color, which are traditionally the most expensive. I have 6 pints into my car already (did the entire engine bay with everything removed, underhood, doors and jambs, hatch and hatch jamb) and now I'm not so sure I want the color any longer.

Make sure you don't mind driving a car painted to look like a soap bubble before you finalize your decision on one of the color shifting shades. There are purple/red to blue shifts, orange to blue, gold to green, green to silver to black, and a number of other "unique" treatments to chose from.

Your local body shop may have a House of Kolor catalog or DuPont catalog in addition to their "house brand" (Sherwin Williams, PPG, etc.) chip books. You can find a color you like by browsing the sample books, and if you plan to keep your engine bay the same color, choose something that will compliment it for the outside, as mentioned by Bacon above.

Good luck!

Yes I plan to paint the doorjams in all. Im trying to find a good shop to paint it as well. Im looking for either a red/bronze color like AARotary's or a blue/silver color of some sort.

Jimlab-how much was your entire paint job?

There are two factors which make that impossible to estimate...

1. I still haven't painted the outside of the car, waiting on A) engine work to be finished, and B) making up my mind what color it's going to end up.

2. My painter gets paid with Budweiser, basically, and the booth time is free. One of my friends is a body shop manager for a Ford dealership and I get the booth time for free. One of my other friends is the head painter at the same shop, so I get my spraying done for free, too. Minus the cost of a case of Bud every time we paint something.

I saw a car the other day that was painted "Orange Peel"
That would be a nice, bright, and unique color to paint your car if you didn't plan on speeding too much.
hehe

Chromalusion friggin' ROCKS!

You guys with the Chromalusion paint make me envious....

I was a DuPont IMRON man, custom blended colors forever....until the Chromalusion line came out.....I haven't been the same since!

When I repaint my car, I will most likely go with a blue-to-green shifting Chromalusion.....damn I love that stuff!

And RX7-2JOCK....your car looks friggin' awesome! What was the original color?

The best thing is to go to an automotive paint store and look at their color chips. It is a book that the paint companies put out that has the colors in it. Take the CHROMALUSION page into the sunlight....my God it is awesome! The hard part is making up your mind about the basic color. Oh.....****, Jimlab already said this.....

Some O'Reilly's Auto Parts sell DuPont paints, check your yellow pages.

And so far the best price I have seen is $308 a pint......Jimlab, where can you get it for $253?

You'd think you'd be able to hook them up with something better than Budweiser...

You can't, unless it's on a car. There's no way to photograph a flat paint sample that will show the color changes, because the color is dependent on viewing angle. The DuPont color books ($60) have little tabs so that the long rectangular color samples can be bent and held in a curved position so that you can view all the color changes. Sherwin Williams has a line called MultiTones which does the same thing, House of Kolor's shades are called Kameleon Colors, PPG has Harlequin Color, and BASF has "Extreme Colors", if you don't want to use DuPont or your local paint distributor can't get you a color book. They're all roughly equivalent in appearance and cost.

From one angle, the paint can appear one color... here's my engine bay looking mostly green...

From a different angle, however, it appears mostly pink/purple, hence the name "Purpleen" for purple-green...

However, the paint changes from green to teal to blue to indigo to purple to pink to rose to gold, but I've yet to capture a picture which shows them all at once.

Here's a better illustration of the color change...

As you can see, the lowest angle along the door sill appears gold-ish, while the paint along the more vertical angles appears blue-purple. However, no green is visible in the second picture.

They are not difficult to match if the car is damaged, as some have rumored. You also do not have to return the excess paint to keep people from forging money with it, as was also rumored. It is expensive, and it's not for everyone, but you will attract a lot of attention.

I'll have to dig up the receipts, but it's a DuPont distributor just north of Northgate for those that know the Seattle area.

Royal Sapphire Pearl, probably. A standard Supra color from '97 and '98.

He *likes* Budweiser...

You just have to ration his intake until after he's shot the clear coat.

First off. Talk about an identity crisis!!! I see a Eclipse, Silvia, Z3, F355 in there. Anyone find anyother parts stolen from other cars.

That color is AWESOME though could be Royal Saphire Pearl, but it looks a bit lighter, that could also be the lighting too.

Here is an original RSP

Just chiming in so I can search later. I'm thinking about painting my car a blue like the one shown.

How much trouble is it to go from black to blue.
